Teacher Profile: Marlo Becton

Marlo Becton is a teacher at Dodgen Middle School. She teaches eighth grade French, Origins of Language, and Reading. Ms. Becton has been using StudyBlue since the summer of 2011. She has been spreading the word around her school and has recruited many other foreign language faculty to try StudyBlue!

How did you learn about StudyBlue?
I learned about StudyBlue through an email suggesting I try it out.

How do you use StudyBlue with your students?
I upload flashcards from our chapters for my students to study at home. I use it for vocabulary and verb conjugations in French. Students can practice at home and download the app for their smartphones to study outside the classroom. I love the feature of using an Excel file to upload – that way, I can just cut and paste from my vocabulary sheets and it takes only a couple of minutes.

Why do your students love StudyBlue?
They love it because they can follow a direct link from my class weblog and study them at home or even download them to their smartphones. So many of my students use it, and I believe it is a fabulous tool for reinforcement and as a study tool.

What are some challenges you face integrating technology in your classroom and school?
We would like to have more access to computers/tablets for students to use on a daily basis.  Also, not every classroom has a SmartBoard. I also need time and resources to create technological activities. We also have a very full curriculum that does not allow for a lot of time to use extra technological activities.

What other technology tools do you utilize with your classes?
I use PowerPoint and the iRespond remote system.

What will you and your students do with all the paper flashcards you no longer need?
I will no longer put index cards on my supply list. By creating the flashcards for my students online, they no longer have to carry around paper cards unless they want to print them out. I can also guarantee that everything is spelled correctly when I create the flashcards for my students.

Thanks to Ms. Becton for using StudyBlue and taking the time to share your thoughts with us!
