What is Sociology?
:the systematic study of human social behavior
(group trends, group interactions, and meanings about the world we all hold in common)
-social work around social problems:
- determines what we can consider to be social problems
- how we can become involved
- how we understand this work
Social Construction
Main Concerns:
- how we understand the world and the meanings we create
- meanings influence our behaviors
- typifications (aka stereotypes)
3 Principles of Social Construction
- The meanings we have of the world are not natural, they are socially constructed
- Meanings are social, historically and culturally specific
(meanings of the world depend on time and space)
ex: smoking
3. Meanings are dynamis and fluid
--> b/c the world is too big, in order to understand it we have to categorize
