Vemos Fuenteovejuna primer acto Utiliza lenguaje cortesana (pg 7) Frondoso "Dios os guarde, hermosas damas" Laurencia "¿Damas, Frondoso, nos llamas?" Irony Frondoso (i'm just doing what everybody does) "Andar al uso queremos: al bachiller, linceniado: al ciego, tuerto, al bisojo?" (onto pagina 8) Quien es Frondoso? Un pastor Bizarro - dresses in a bizarre way, young and flashy. He's in fashion, just not the pueblo fashion Un narrador, clase mas alta Nombre nos indica algo de su interioridad - frondoso significa "lush, leafy" so he's very showy Laurencia reacciona: "Allá en la ciudad, Frondoso, llámase por cortesía de esta suerte; y a fe mía, que hay otro más riguroso y peor vocabulario en las lenguas descorteses." Contraste entre - same thing being treated but in a different way. Meant to see through his words. Very arrogant, cocky, shallow. He'll lose this personality during the play Laurencia responde de la misma forma - tomar algo y decir peor. Then they have a discussion;Sobre que discuten? Mengo - a gracioso en la comedia - the funny man, the butt of jokes. Can't have a serious play all the time. Laurencia responde: "para gozarla" Mengo twists it and turns it into a love of self again: "¿no es para él mismo?" Barrildo rounds off the definición de Platón by talking about the directiono f that love "Platón que nos enseñaban a amar; que éste amaba el alma sola y la virtud de lo amado." (10) Seeks the betterment of the person loved Mengo: "¿Amas tú?" (10). Laurencia: "Mi propio honor." (10). Comendador no crea que los pastores tienen honor; they can't defend their honor because they can't control their desire. They are animals, they respond to their animalistic deseos. Laurencia le pide a Frondoso hable a su padre; no free giving of her person. He has to go through her father, ask for her hand in marriage, this is preserving her honor. Contrastes directos "right of first night" - claim to lie with a woman the first night. She respects the forms of society where as the Comendador does not. He thinks they only apply to people of his class, and not for others. Have high class names, but they aren't high class. They just act that way. Vítor - "long life!" "viva viva!" "el amor que habéis aquí mostrado" - he is speaking about those vítores ¿Qué hacen los pastores? Por el bienestar del pueblo - tiene la misma función de los reyes Seeing what is going to happen - they take steps to protect themselves from a change in weather. So they're acting as the kings would act. There are people in the town who act like kings do Page 1 - first explicit talk of men of distaste for Comedador and alluding to his impending death Comendador laughs at the men (3) - military orders developed along monastic lines. Acto III Something about rape - you know she wasn't raped because if she had, she would have had to go into a nunnery She speaks out about the men - put the dress of women, women will take over your role. Women can defend themselves. Kings decide the just thing is to kill everyone or to kill no one, so they kill no one. Tyranny is the only reason a town can overthrow a lord.
