language & communication
language is only part of communication
-1/3 of communicating
-nonverbal is 1/3
verbal communication
language use
ex) sign language
-verbal because each symbol stands for a word
nonverbal communication !IMPORTANT!
other ques that are non-verbal
VOCAL: sound, doesn't mean VERBAL
(vocal can be nonverbal)
Paralanguage
type of NVB
volume-pitch, tone, loudness
vocal ques that are verbal (everything you do with your mouth that aren't words)
intonation: make a sentence sound like a question by changing pitch
meaning of a statement can be shaped by this (depends on what word is emphasized)^^
body motions
type of NVB
not body language!! -because it's not verbal
movement of body
body motions -gestures
relatively quick body motions of one body part
have certain meaning
ex) smiling, hand motion
COMPOUND gesture: shrug
body motions -emblems
gestures with direct verbal translatin
ex) making a ring with fingers means OK!
body motions -illustrators
gestures that go with verbal message through illustration (picture of what is going on)
ex) lengths made with arms
body motions -regulators
different gestures we use that regulate flow of conversation
ex) head nodding, eye contact, hands
body motions -affect displays
emotional display
facial display: smile
more-complicated displays
body motions -posture
express/convey character
appearance
type of NVB
purposely manipulate how we appear to communicate
proxemics
type of NVB
use of space to convey meaning
NVB have animal analogues
(Summary) Types of Nonverbal Behavior
1. paralanguage
2. body motions
3. appearance
4. proxemics
relation of NVB and verbal behavior
1. repeat
say 'two' and hold out 2 fingers
2. contradict
verbal/NVB directly contradict (smile but scream)
3. complement
describe directions while pointing, diff info from diff sources
4. substitute
hold up #2 but don't say it
5. accent/modify
changes/aplifies or tones down something, the WAY you say it
6. regulate
make noises gesturing that you want to talk, start/stop talking initiators
functions of NVB
1) providing information
-emotions = expressions Ex) crying
2) assisting word retrieval
-looking up, looking around, moving hands; helps you retrieve info better when you move
3) regulating interaction
-IMing, hard to regulate convo because people interfere when trying to talk
-hard to do because no NVB and end up talking about multiple things at once
4) expressing intimacy
-kissing
-express through proxemics
-read people differently depending on the relationship you have with them
functions of NVM cont...
5) managing/conveying ID
-posture: shows ID
-clothes: shows what ex. of male/female you are
covey social/gender roles
6) facilitating task goals
-things we wouldn't normally have done, we make exceptions for certain people (like docs/hairdressers)
myths about NVB
1)not simple relationship between NVB and verbal meaning
-most NVB means many things
2)there are clear NVB markers of lying -FALSE!!!!!
-cannot tell when someone is lying
Universal Nonverbal Behaviors
1. facial expressions of emotion (expressions are recognizable across cultures but cultures had diff rules for displaying them)
2. eyebrow flash (open to talk, something caught your attention, flirting, approval/emphasis)
3. face and mouth hiding (coyness, flirty, embarrassment)
4. head shaking and nodding (yes/no)
5. phallic symbols (aggression, domination, power...flip someone off, penis)
THERE ARE COMMON PATTERNS ACROSS CULTURES BUT EACH CULTURE ADAPTS THE PATTERN
