1/28 Notes Culture- a system of shared meaning that dictates how organizational members behave. Suggests the correct way to do things. ?Personality? of the organization. ?Clues to Culture? Values- look at the values of the organization through the owners and top decision makers. I.E. Wal-Mart?s owner driving a beat-up pickup truck represents frugality. Symbols- logos tell you a lot about a company, look at what they put out there. Practices- things that happen frequently in the life of an organization. Sister Act movie- the practice of the Convent in the movie illustrates the way the Convent acts. I.E. raising hand to talk, same uniforms, specific place for each utensil, suppression of individual personality, punishment if not following rules/leader. Rituals- Don?t happen as often as practices. I.E. annual contests indicate fun, Ben and Jerry?s look-alike contest annuals. The Lion King birth of Simba. Organization; Animal Kingdom, ritual: Birth ceremony. Myths: A story that could or could not be true. I.E. Students thinking that Dr. Neck?s tests are easy after one class of students first test. Perception- the act of understanding by means of the senses or the mind. The CD activity related to perception, because students guessed the type of music based on their perception of the student. Our perceptions can be distorted due to: Bracketing (1)- accessing a ?file? in your head from past experiences and activating it. Chunking (2) SWOT Strengths- what you or an organization does well (Internal) Weaknesses- What you or an organization does poorly (Internal) Opportunities- things outside of an organization that can enhance goal achievement (External) Threats- things that can serve as an obstacle or prevent goal achievement. (External) People who view stimuli as a strength or opportunity they persist longer, exert more effort, and perform at a higher level.
