Intro To Sociology Notes February 8th, 2008 Rituals Anomie Control Theory - Socialization into gender Gender messages in the family Who does what in the family? Son helps dad with fieldwork, and daughter helps mother with house work Your influenced by your family in a certain way The peer group Individuals that share common interest. (not necessarily immediate family), just someone who is a peer and is very influential in a person?s life. Ex. Guy had strict family and would always have to call in to tell his parents where he was? Curfew, and when he went to college he went crazy? Parents told son to not hang out with those people, and parents told them not to hang out with them, so son rebels because the son can relate with his peers? Influenced by your peers in any way Gender messages in the Mass Media Television and Movies Video Games Its ok for guy too be ugly and get with hot chick, but u almost never see ugly girls with hot guys? Agents of Socialization The Family The Neighborhood Very influential on a person depending on where they grow up whether its low class, middle class, or high class? Ex. If ur from a middle class family, parents will likely have a white collar job and a low class family would probably work a blue collar job? People who work a blue collar job, probably work lots of hours to support their family? Low class parents probably can?t show up to their kids events? Both Families have kids that are involved in extracurricular activities, the middle class parents will likely show up to their sons/daughters events, parents will be more influential to these kids? Ex. Person from low class family doesn?t rely so much on their parents because they don?t have a strong tie to their family? These groups are more influenced by their peers, which is why these people normally commit more crimes than higher class citizens? Religion All religions have something in common, and that is to be a good citizen, and that everyone is going to die? BUT there is an afterlife and you have to follow certain rules to get their? Karl Marx ? Saw religion as Opium of the people because in our society not everyone is an upper class. Ex. He saw religion as a drug for people? Ex to make them feel better because many people turn to religion for hope or salvation. Day Care Kids learn socialization skills, but if the kids start going to day care too early, the kid will start thinking he has a super ego, because in day care they teach u to conform and they take away ur individuality. ME or Super Ego is a group thing, where as I or I.D. Is a one person thing? Kids that go to day care early will most likely not stand up for their rights because standing up is an individual thing, and not necessarily a group thing? Rituals ? Moral common Control Ex. People get on their feet when someone sings the national anthem? The School and peer groups Schools teach people to conform to the rules of society? Ex. Respect ur elders and authorities? such as a teacher or government? The Workplace Resocialization A person is taught to do something differently from the way they are already familiar with? Control Theory ? 2 Systems that keep u from deviating from society 1st Inner Control ? Believe how strong ??? 2nd outer control ? is your friends and ur family Ur friends would tell u don?t do this, because its bad or if I do this, I might disappoint my parents Very strong in Japanese culture, because still has high crime rate, but one of lowest in the world? Sons/daughters don?t want to disappoint their family? Degradation level because u disconnect from society? Total Institutions Boot camps, and prisons where they have total control over individual so they can teach u how u should act or behave? Also military and private schools have total control because u all have to dress a certain way? Primary Groups and Secondary Groups Primary groups are ur family and religion Secondary groups are the workplace You already learned ur rituals and everything, u just follow workplace rules?
