Transversalis fascia

Lines the internal abdominal cavity. (Like endothoracic fascia of thoracic cavity)

Peritoneum

Serous membrane (instead of pleura/thoracic). Covers transversalis fascia

Parietal peritoneum

Lines abdominal walls

Visceral peritoneum

Covers organs

Connecting peritoneum

Between organs or connecting organs to parietal peritoneum

Mesentary

Attaches organ to body wall (ex. Mesoduodenum)

Fold

Attaches organ to organ (ex. Ileocecal fold)

Ligament

Between organ and body wall or between organs

Omentum

Attaches stomach to adjacent organs

Greater omentum

From greater curvature of stomach to dorsal body wall

Lesser omentum

From lesser curvature of stomach to liver and duodenum

Peritoneal cavity

Potential space w/in the abdominal cavity (where stuff can accumulate)

Contains a small amount of fluid - NO ORGANS!!

Intraperitoneal organs

Organs that are completely covered by peritoneum

Retroperitoneal organs

Organs that lie against the body wall and are covered on one surface

Inguinal canal

Term used to describe the area between the internal and external inguinal rings. Essentially a CT-filled fissure between the internal and external inguinal rings. No actual 'canal' exists, it is simply the space between the rights.

Superficial/External inguinal ring

Sagitally oriented slit in the aponeurosis of the EAO muscle. Farthest one out.

Deep/Internal inguinal Ring

Triangular opening with several boundaries.

Caudal - Inguinal ligament

Cranial - Caudal border of IAO

Medial - Lateral edge or RA (prepubic tendon)

Inguinal ligament

A fibrous condensation of the EAO aponeurosis

Vaginal ring

Refers to the peritoneal 'ring' located at the internal/abdominal opening of the inguinal canal. It represents the point at which the vaginal peritoneum descends into the inguinal canal.

Structures that pass through the Inguinal Canal

Vaginal process
Testicular a,v, n.
Mesoductus deferens and mesorchium
Cremaster muscle
External pudendal vessels
Genitofemoral nerve
Round ligament of uterus

Form the bulk of the spermatic cord

Ductus deferens

Carries sperm from the epididymis to the urethra

Mesentaries of the spermatic cord structures

External pudendal vessels

Arise from the external iliacs, give rise to the epigastric vessels (one of the sources to the penis and prepuce)

Genitofemoral nerve

Innervates skin or scrotum (male)/Inguinal mammary gland and overlying skin (female)

Vaginal process

Peritoneum goes from deep ring, through vaginal canal, out superficial ring.
