Fuselage
This part of the plane contains the cabin / cockpit, with seats, room for cargo, major component attachment points, and controls for the plane.
Firewall
The fireproof section between the engine and the Fuselage, to protect the pilot / passengers form accidental engine fires.
Truss-Type Fuselage
Is constructed of steel / aluminum (less weight) tubing that uses Longerons, Diagonal Web Members, and Vertical Web Members. The tubes are welded together in a series of triangular shapes.
Trusses
Welded triangular shapes.
Monocoque / Semimonocoque
Stressed skin, formers, and bulkheads, that goes on the outside of the trusses. It cannot tolerate dents or deformation on the surface.
Wings
Airfoils that are attached to each side of the Fuselage (high-, mid-, or low-) and are the main lifting surfaces that support the airplane in flight.
Monoplanes
Airplanes with a single set of wings.
Biplanes
Airplanes with two sets of wings.
Wing Ribs
Determines the thickness and shape of the airfoil.
Fuel Tank
Part of the wing's structure, or a flexible container mounted inside the wing.
Ailerons
Extending from the midpoint to the tip of the wing, and attached to the trailing part of the wing. These move in opposite directions of the Wing Flap to create aerodynamic forces that cause the airplane to roll.
Wing Flap
Flush with the Wing’s surface during cruise flight. These extend from the Fuselage to the midpoint of the airfoil. When these are down, they increase the lifting force of the wing.
Empennage
The tail section of an airplane that includes the vertical stabilizer, horizontal stabilizer, rubber, elevator, and trim tabs.
Rubber
Attached to the Vertical Stabilizer. It is used in combination with the ailerons to turn the plane left or right.
Elevator
Attached to the back of the horizontal stabilizer. It is used to move the nose up or down during flight.
Trim Tabs
Small, moveable portions of the trailing edge of the control surface, that reduce control pressures. These are located on the ailerons, rubber / elevator.
Stabilator
Another type of Empennage that does not include elevators, but has a one-piece horizontal stabilizer that pivots from a central hinge point (just as you would with an elevator).
Antiservo Tab
Moves in the same direction as the trailing edge of the Stabilator. It also relieves control pressures.
Landing Gear
The principle support of the plane when parked, taxiing, taking off, or when landing. This includes the wheels / floats / skis.
Conventional Landing Gear
Tailwheel Airplanes. Two Main wheels and a rear mounted wheel of the airplane.
Nosewheel
Tricycle Gear. Two main wheels and a front mounted wheel of the airplane.
Powerplant
Includes the engine, propeller, firewall, and cowling.
Engine
Provides power to turn the propeller, generates electrical power, provides vacuum source for certain flight instruments, and source of heat for pilot and passengers.
Cowling / Nacelle
Covers the engine, which streamlines the flow of air around the cylinders to help keep the engine cool.
Propeller
Mounted on the front of the engine, that translates the force of the engine into a forwarding force to move the airplane through the air.
Thrust
Forward acting force.
