Queensland: Rainbow Creative Productions, 2008. 217-221. Print. Karen Brooks wrote a very interesting chapter in this book about the influence technology among teens. Although it was published in 2008 it seems to be a little outdated in the way that Myspace is the most recent social network written about. Also, text messages are referred to SMS?s, but that could also a cultural thing since she is from Australia. Brooks has written about seven books, but they all appear to be fiction books. This is interesting because writing about pop culture and teens, isn?t fiction. The fiction books that she does write about are based on teen issues. There doesn?t appear to be much bias in this chapter because it is explanatory. The only thing that I could think of would be her views on media and kids. Brooks takes the stance that it isn?t okay for children to be exposed to the things that they are being exposed to, and how it has a negative impact on their lives. She started her schooling at the University of Sydney, dropped out, and ended up going to La Trobe University where she received her doctorate degree. I think that this book is relevant to my topic because it shows how new media has acted as a gateway to other things that teens have gotten into, such as sexting. Brooks uses many different statistics in order to support her ideas, and she gives very good examples that relate to the issues plaguing our younger society. Celizic, Mike. "Her Teen Committed Suicide over 'Sexting'." Today Show. 06 MAR 2009. MSNBC.com, Web. 24 Feb 2010. . There have been many horrific accidents associated with sexting. This article was about a girl that killed herself because she was harassed for the provocative pictures that she sent her boyfriend. Her Mom went to the Today Show in order to get her daughter?s story out. The Today Show is a very reliable news program, because it broadcasts across the country on various types of news stories. The author, Mike Celizic, has been a writer for 12 years at MSNBC, and is a very recognized senior correspondent for this news outlet. The article was supported very well because there were many quotes that came from the mother, and also quotes from the school board. The bias in this article was the viewpoint that the school system should have done something about this issue, since after the fact they said that they knew the harassment was going on. This is relevant to my paper, because it gives an example of what can happen when teenagers participate in sexting. The date also makes this article relevant, since it was published around this time last year, it is still recent news. Feyerick, Deborah, and Shelia Steffen. "'Sexting' lands teen on sex offender list." CNN News.com. 08 APR 2009. CNN, Web. 27 Feb 2010. . This article is about a young boy that sent nude pictures of his girlfriend to friends of hers after they had an argument. He was caught by the police, and as a minor now has a felony charge and is a registered sex offender. This article is relevant to the paper that I am writing because it explains what can happen to the kids that distribute these ?pornographic? pictures. The crazy thing is the kids don?t even know the consequences. There isn?t bias in this article, because it explains the story of a boy who was convicted of sending ?pornography.? The authors of this article are both very credible CNN news correspondents. Feyerick is an award-winning correspondent that graduated from Columbia University; she even travels around the world for them. Steffen is a producer for CNN, who is also a very well educated correspondent, and has done many things with this news organization. This article was published just about a year ago, which signifies how important this issue really is. There were many different supports used in the article to show that it was legitimate. Quotes from the convicted teenager and his mother were used to show how they felt, and the fact the young boy didn?t even know that the pictures he was receiving were illegal. Kingston, Anne. James Madison University. 24 Feb. 2010 . This article obtained from Maclean?s, a Canadian weekly news magazine, is very insightful. The author Anne Kingston is an award-winning journalist who writes about the how sexting has swept through young people?s phones in United States. Kingston supports her article by using multiple national and US media sources, including famous periodicals and news personalities such as News Week and Katie Couric, to build credibility. This article was in the March 16th magazine of last year, so it is relevant to the time since this had been a recent ongoing issue. It appears that there is no bias in the viewpoint of this article. This author gives the pure facts, and doesn?t even throw in things about how Canada could be better as it relates to this issue. She does work for a news magazine so there is motive to sell copies, but I think that her motive was to choose an interesting topic and explain it well to the readers. This timely information will be useful in my paper because it talks about the different laws that Canada and the US have for sexting, and because it is related to high school age kids using this form of communication. Manzo, Kathleen. "Administrators Confront Student 'Sexting'." Education Digest Nov 2009: 13-16. Print. The Education Digest is a magazine written for teachers and administrators to inform them the latest news about what is happening in education. The author Kathleen Manzo is a writer, an editor for another magazine called Education week, and an educator. These credentials show that she is highly certified to write about the ongoing ordeal of sexting in the education world. There are many quotes used by administrators and members of various school board members to support the article. Since this is a magazine used primarily for teachers and administrators the article is solely on the education side of the issue of sexting and not what the students have to say about it, making it somewhat biased. It gives information on what the school board wants to do about this problem. Some of these include creating more rules as it pertains to texting in school, and for schools to give seminars to students and parents on the dangers associated with sexting. This is a recent article, so it shows it?s relevant to this current issue. This source will be useful in my paper because it gives the viewpoint from an educator?s standpoint, and it also discusses sexting in the high school setting. McCall, Jeffrey. Viewer Discretion Advised: Taking Control of Mass Media Influences. Plymouth, UK: Rowman & Littlefield Publications, 2007. 29-48. Print. One of the reasons that sexting has become popular is because teens have been told it?s ?okay? by the media. Since the 1990?s the laws pertaining to sex, exposure, and indecency on television have been loosened greatly. McCall an accredited professor from Depauw University wrote a book about how the mass media needs to be controlled, and one of the chapters was about the laws of indecency on television. One of the points that he made was how even smart people in our world don?t understand the effects that media has on us. This book was written in 2007, but the points that he makes don?t seem to be out of date. He goes over the laws that have been put into place, and the points that he makes are all relevant to today, and today?s society. By using the different dates of when acts were passed he supports his ideas that the regulations of the media are getting too lenient. McCall isn?t overly biased, he just states his idea that children shouldn?t be exposed to sexual images at such a young age, and have such easy access to them. This is because it allows them to think that acting in promiscuous ways is okay. This is relevant because the chapter explains how having lenient rules on television effects the way kids act. If a child thinks it?s okay to send nude pictures of themselves to their significant others, then they will see no reason not to. Schulte, Grant. "Iowa Court Upholds 'Sexting' Conviction." USA Today. 18 SEP 2009. USA Today, Web. 24 Feb 2010. . Last September, the USA Today had an article online that gave a great example of what happens to teens that sext. The USA Today is a very credible news organization that distributes news across the country. The author of this article, Grant Schulte, is a correspondent in Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa and has been writing for about seven years. He supports the claims he makes by actual quotes and accounts of what happened in the Iowa courtroom. An 18 year old was sexting with a 14 year-old girl, which obviously caused problems. This article isn?t biased in any way, it simply tells about what happened in the courtroom of this sexting case. It gives a great example of how the kids that don?t even know what they are doing are convicted of major crimes. The boy in this article was added to the sex offender list because of this incident. I feel like this article is relevant to my paper because it was published in September of 2009, and because it gives an actual example of a sexting case as opposed to most articles. I thought this was interesting because most of the articles only talk about what sexting is, and how school officials need to deal with it. "'Sexting' Spreading Among Teens." ABC News. Web. 24 Feb 2010. In December of 2008, ABC News came out with a report on teens that sext. The statistics that they used from the Cyber Safety and Ethics Initiatives said that about 25% of high school students have participated in the phenomena of sexting, and kids as your as 4th graders have participated as well. This news report has done a good job at documenting and supporting their information by using other sources and information such as the statistics stated above. This video clip has the credentials to be believed by the public because ABC news is a trusted news organization that reports on worldwide news everyday. Although the report was done a little over a year ago it is still current and up to date. The only thing that may have changed is that the numbers of high school age kids that sext has risen. My paper will be able to gain credibility by using this source because it is popular and well known by just about everyone that has a television set. Even though some newscasts are biased this one doesn?t appear to be; it solely gives facts and statistical information that has to deal with sexting. In addition to that, students have been interviewed giving their thoughts and opinions on the topic. "States Consider New 'Sexting' Laws." eSchool News. 17 APR 2009. eSchool News, Web. 27 Feb 2010. . In this article written by staff writers of eSchool News there were many points about changing the laws of sexting. One thing that I found to give this article less credentials was the fact that there wasn?t a specific author listed. There was no bias in the article; it was used to simply state facts about what is to come as it relates to the laws and consequences of sexting. One of the laws says that there would now be exemption from prosecution on pornography charges for 13-18 years olds. The information that this article talks about is still very relevant due to its timeliness. The article was published in April of last year, and it discussed legislation being worked on. I feel that that this article is relevant to my paper because it will help provide evidence about the current legislation, so I can discuss the changes that are in the process of being made. The researchers of this article did their homework in the sense that there is a large amount of documentation of actual bills that were about to be passed. The writers did a good job at using quotes to support their ideas as well. The only reason why I wouldn?t use this source is because there are no definite authors. Vena, Jocelyn. "MTV News' 'Sexting In America: When Privates Go Public' Premieres On Valentine's Day." MTV News. 03 FEB 2010. MTV News, Web. 27 Feb 2010. . Since sexting has become such a nationally viewed issue MTV decided to do a special on the issue of sexting and cyber bullying. This article written by Jocelyn Vena discusses what will be on the program. Vena, a NYU graduate has been a gossip columnist and journalist since 2006. Since 2006 she has written for three magazines and MTV. Although she has lots of experience with writing, gossip columnists aren?t known for their credibility. This MTV special was hosted by a large amount of younger celebrities in order to get the word out about issues relating to sexting. It was published on the third of February, but since the show was released this Valentine?s day it is a little out of date, because one can watch the show now. There was no bias, because this article was an informative article trying to get the public excited for this show. I think that this article is relevant to my paper because we can see that any celebrities are getting involved with this social issue, and people need to realize the true dangers of sexting and cyber bullying. There isn?t really much support and documentation in this article since it?s mainly used to hype the show, so I don?t think I will be using it as one of my main sources to back up my information in the rest of my paper.
