Nonpartisan Election
a local or judicial election in which candidates are not selected or endorsed by political parties, and party afficiations are not listed on ballots
Articles of Confederation
first governing document of the confederated states drafted in 1777, replaced by the Consitution
Shay's Rebellion
Rebellion by farmers in western Massachusetts in 1786-1787, protesting mrtgage forclosures: led by Daniel Shay and important because it highlighted the need for a strong central government

the principle of a 2 house legislature
New Jersey Plan
proposal at the Constitutional convention made by William Paterson of New Jersey. -a central government witha single house legisature in which each state would be represented equally
Conneticut Compromise
Conpromise agreement by states at the Constitutional Convention for abicameral legislature, with a lower house in which representation would be based on population and a upper house with each state would have 2 seats

Directive issud by a president or governor that has the force of law

Constitutional grants of power that enables each of the 3 branches of government to check some acts of the others and therefore ensure that no branch can dominate

an opinion disagreeing with the majority in a Supreme Court ruling
Concurring Opinion
an opinion that agrees with the majority in a Supreme Court ruling, but a differs on the reasoning
Writ of Certioari
a formal writ used to bring a case before the Supreme Court
Electoral College
the electoral system in electing the President and Vice President, in which voters vote for electors pledge to cast their ballots for a particular party's candidates
Closed Primary
primary election in which only persons registered in the party holding the primary may vote
Mass Media
means of communication that reach te mss public, indluding newspapers and magazines, radio, television (broadcast, cable, satalite), film, recordings, books, electronic communication
Minor Party
a small political party that rises and falls with a charismatic candidate, o if composed of ideologies on the right or left, usualy persists over time: also called a third party
Issue Advocacy
promoting a particular position or and issue paid for by intrest groups, or individuals but not a candidate. Much issue advocacy is often electioering for or against a candidate and unit 2004 had not been subject to any regulation
Divided Govenment
governance divided between the parites, especially when one hold the Presidency and the controls one or both houses of congress
Libertarian Party
a minor party that believes in extremly limited government. Librtarian call for a free market system, expanded individual liberties such as drug legalization and a foreign policy of non-intervention free trake and open immigration

election in which voters choose party nominies

primary election n which any voter, regardless of party, may vote
Winner-Take-All System
an election system in which the candidate with the most votes wins
Kegnesian Economics
theory based on the principles of John Maynard Keynes, stating that government spending should increase during buisness slumps, and be curbed during booms
Office Block Ballot
ballot on which all the candidates are listed under the office for which they are running, makeing split ticket voting easier
Coattail Effect
the boost that a candidate may get in an election because of the popularity of candidates above them on the ballot, especially the President
Party Column Ballot
type of ballot that encourages party-line voting by listing all of a party's candidates in a column under the party name
Attentive Public
those citizens who follow public affairs carefully
Voter Registration
system designed to reduce voter fraud by limiting voting to those who have established eligibility by submitting the proper form
Crossover Voting
voting by a member of one party for a candidate of another party
Candidate Appeal
how voters feel about a candidate's background, personality, leadership ablility, and other personal qualities
Soft Money
money raised in umlimited amounts by political parites for party building purposes. Now largely illegal, except for limited contributions to state or local parities for voter registration and get-out-the-vote efforts
Single-Member Districts
an electoral district in which voters choose one representative or official

compromise between northern and southern states at the Constitutional Convention that 3/5 of the slave population would be counted for determining direct taxation and reprentation in the House of Representatives

supporters of ratification of the Constitution whose position promoting a strong central government was later voiced in the Federalist Party
