Bauhaus

to build a house in german or rebuilding German Society

Walter Gropius

-founder of Bauhaus movement
-wanted to take down the social barrier between craftsman and artist
-architectural & design styles that reflect the new era after the war
-design has to be functional, cheap, & has to be good enough even though manufactured (quality)

Philosophy

-radical shift in feelings toward art & design
-classical styles have bad taste
-no applied ornamental design
-design is produced by ppl. regardless of social class

Characteristics

-use standardized, non-subjective forms they found through research-easy application to manufacture
-non-representational forms, geometrical forms & stark shapes
-black & white & 1or 2 primary colors if they had to (accent)
-colors come from the color of the material (inherent color)
-wood, tubular skill, clay & textile, glass & cement
