circadian rhythm
biological clock, regular bodily rhythms that occur on a 24-hour cycle (temperature/ wakefulness)
Suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)
area of the hypothalamus, located just above the optic chiasm, that constitutes the biological clock
Melatonin
a hormone, secreted by the pineal gland, that is involved in the regulation of daily biological rhythms.
REM sleep
rapid eye movement sleep, a recurring sleep stage during which vivid dreams commonly occur
alpha waves
the relatively slow brain waves of a relaxed, awake state
sleep
periodic, natural, reversible loss of consciousness- as distinct from unconsciousness resulting from a coma, general anesthesia, or hibernations
Sleep stage 1
-easily aroused
-if awakened, feels as though daydreaming
-may experience involuntary muscle jerking & wake up
-lightest level of sleep
-lasts a few minutes
-about 5% of total sleep
Sleep stage 2
-sound sleep
-increased relaxation
-relatively easy arousal
-lasts 10-20 minutes
-bursts of rapid
sleep stage 3
-initial stages of deep sleep
-difficult to arouse and rarely moves
-muscles relaxed
-vital signs decline but are regular
-lasts 15-30 minutes
-about 10% of sleep
Sleep stage 4
-slow wave stage
-lasts for about 30 mins
-very hard to awaken
-sleepwalking or wetting the bed is most likely to occur
Hypnagogic sensations
sensations such as hallucinations that may later be incorporated into memories.
Sleep Spindles
Bursts of rapid, rhythmic brain-wave activity.
delta waves
the large, slow brain waves associated with deep sleep
paradoxical sleep
body is externally aroused and internally calm
sleep debt
brains record of lost sleep that has to be made up (sleep later on weekend)
Sleep's 5 functions
1. sleep protects
2. sleep helps us recuperate
3. sleep is for making memories
4. sleep feeds creative thinking
5. sleep plays a role in the growth process
insomnia
recurring problems in falling or staying asleep
Narcolepsy

- Attack usually lasts less than 5 minutes
sleep apnea
a sleep disorder characterized by temporary cessations of breathing during sleep and repeated momentary awakenings
Night terrors
a sleep disorder characterized by high arousal and an appearance of being terrified; unlike nightmares, night terrors occur during stage 4 sleep, within two or three hours of falling asleep, and are seldom remembered
dream
a sequence of images, emotions, and thoughts passing through a sleeping person's mind. Dreams are notable for their hallucinatory imagery, discontinuities, and incongruities, and for the dreamer's delusional acceptance of the content and later difficulties remembering it
manifest content
according to Freud, the remembered story line of a dream
latent content
according to Freud, the underlying meaning of a dream
Activation-Synthesis Theory
Theory that dreams reflect inputs from brain activation originating in the pons, which the forebrain then attempts to weave into a story
REM rebound
the tendency for REM sleep to increase following REM sleep deprivation ( created by repeated awakenings during REM sleep)
