The second withdrawl, Tyre and Sidon in Phoenicia, there they are encountered by a gentile woman. Jesus said that my ministry is to the Jews. Jesus called her an unclean dog but she is happy to have bread crumbs; Jesus casts out her demons
Herodians were those Jews who favored those that ruled over, not the Saducces. Jesus talked about leaven as an evil, when talking of the leaven He’s talking about the false teachings of religious leaders.
Keys to all of the disciples, not just Peter. Whatever you bind on earth will already be bound in heaven. Whatever you loose on earth will already be loosed in heaven. They are given authority.
Discussion of resurrection, Elijah, and John the Baptizer
Peter, James, and John discuss how Elijah must come before the Messiah to fulfill prophecy. Jesus tells them that Elijah has come. They understand Him, this was John the Baptist
At the bottom of the mountain a man asks the apostles to heal their demonic son, but they couldn't do it. Jesus says it can only be done with prayer because the apostles neglected their prayer life; Jesus casts out the demons
“The son of God will die and be raised again on the third day.” The disciples understood PARTLY and they grieved. They only thought about the death and overlooked the resurrection.
Disciples argue over who is the greatest. Jesus tells them that they must have the humility and faith like a child. If you would be first, you must be last. If you would be the greatest in the kingdom, you must be servant.
Jesus said to John, “the one who is not against us, is for us. We should be very careful about offending a little one (or a new believer). It would be better to attach a millstone around your neck and jump into the sea rather than to offend.”
Treatment and forgiveness of a sinning brother
A man came up to Jesus and said “I will follow you anywhere.” Jesus said foxes have their dens…but the son of man has no place to lay His head. Point, Jesus has no home, count the cost before you jump into something. Jesus said “follow me.”
Jesus had four half-brothers. They said, “If you are really who you said you are, go to the feast of the tabernacles and announce yourself to the world.” Jesus responded “My time is not yet.” He is on God’s timing.
Go through Samaria to get to Jerusalem, they did not receive them kindly. James and John, sons of Zebedee, said to Jesus “Do you want us to call down fire from heaven and destroy them? Give us the authority and we’ll do that.” Jesus rebuked them. James and John had the reputation of being “hotheads,” given the name Boanerges (sons of thunder)
Feast of Tabernacles
celebration and remembrance of God’s faithfulness when they lived in tabernacles in the wilderness
Jesus came to the feast of tabernacles later in the week, taught in a tabernacle and got some attention. The account is given only by John (in Jerusalem) and Luke (outside of Jerusalem, in Judea).
More open to Jesus - some said He was a good man, others said He had a devil, some believed He was the Messiah
Jesus is wrong and our leaders are correct, why don’t they refute Jesus?
Temple came back empty handed. Their excuse was “no one speaks as this man speaks” Officers' reaction: Nicodemus might be a “secret disciple” (according to Youngblood). He said something about not charging unless there is proof for the offense.
Jesus is now openly claiming to be the light of the world, to have a unique relationship with God the Father, accuses the religious to be children of the devil, He claims to be able to give eternal life, and He claims pre-existence (He is not saying that Abraham knew Jesus, but He believed in God). I tell you the truth, before Abraham was born, I Am.
Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd.” As the Good Shepherd He leads the sheep, protects them, loves them, provides for them, and He lays down His life for the sheep.
A larger group of disciples sent out in pairs. He gives them similar instructions. They returned with joy and said “Lord even the demons submit to us in Your name." Jesus says, “I say Satan fall like lightening from heaven. I have given you authority to step on snakes and overcome all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice over that, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven”
His motivation is to put Jesus to the test “what shall I do to inherit eternal life. The law says to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. And love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus says, “do this and you will live” The man wanted to justify himself and said “who is my neighbor?” Jesus tell the story of the good Samaritan. Then Jesus asked him “who proved to be a neighbor?”
Jesus gets accused for blasphemy for casting out demons. Defenses: A strong man must be overpowered by a stronger man. Why would Satan fight against himself and cast out the demon? ; Reforming requires absolute commitment. House was left empty (picture of his body); Sign of Jonah went to the Ninevites and they repented, something even greater is here, something greater then Solomon, Jesus Himself was the sign.
Warning the disciples about hypocrisy
The time is coming when their hypocrisy will be revealed and the Father will confess or deny those who denied Him.
“Parable of the rich man.” They have a great year, harvest the crops, and the man says, My barns are not big enough to hold my barns. Tear them down and build bigger ones, they I will sit down and relax. Jesus rebukes him and tells him not to build up earthly troubles. God cares for the lilies and the birds, how much more you? Seek Him and His Kingdom.
Jesus gives illustration of the servants and the master who went away to a marriage feast. The servants don’t know how long he will be gone. They have to be prepared for His return. Illustration of the homeowner, if he knew when the thief was coming, he would prevent it. But we don’t know when Jesus is coming, be prepared!
Baptism-a reference to His death. It ill bring division, not peace. It divides people between the believer and the unbeliever.
As you are on your way with your adversary with your judge. Make peace with the adversary before you get there. If you wait til the judgment you will be guilty.
Current tragedies: Pilate Slaughters Galileans; Tower of Siloen falls, 18 killed. Jesus said, were these people killed because they were more wicked? Are they being punished? No! I tell you, unless you repent all of you will parish and experience spiritual separation from God.
John tells the story of Jesus about how sheep know their masters voice, and they don’t follow a stranger. They are in my Father’s hand, no one can pluck them out. It’s a relationship!
The narrow way is difficult, the wide gate is easy. The narrow gate is in inclusive and easy.
Lost sheep-shepherd goes to find the lost sheep and there is rejoicing; Lost coin-woman has 10 coins (possible her dowry), loses one, neighbors rejoiced with her; Lost son-prodigal son, or the parable of the waiting father. Older son-pharisees/jews, younger son-common people/gentiles
Warning about causing others to sin; If your brother sins rebuke him, if he repents forgive him; If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, the tree will obey you, the power of faith; If you have a servant plowing and looking after the sheep, when he comes in he would prepare him his meal first. We are unworthy to be serving our Lord, even to be in His presence. Our attitude is serving God in response to His love, not expecting a pat on the back
Jesus commanded the stone to be rolled away and said “Lazarus come forth!” Lazarus had to be loosed because he was bound in his clothes.
Because Lazarus had been raised from the death, they thought that this would grow Jesus’ popularity and that He would cause an uprising with His followers. Caiaphas, the high priest, unknowingly makes a prophesy. “Better for one man to die then for all the people to die.”
Be persistent with prayer. The Pharisee standing out on the street corner, praying in public, he is not praying to God, he is giving a speech trying to impress people. The tax collector said Lord be merciful to me, a sinner.
Hillel-liberal view, a man can divorce his wife for any reason; Shammai-conservative view, the only reason for divorce is sexual unfaithfulness (fornication, before marriage or adultery, during marriage)
*Shammai view is like Jesus' view
Little children flocking around Jesus, the apostles trying to shoo them away “children should be seen and not heard,” Jesus said, “let the children come to me, you need to have child like faith to enter the Kingdom of God.”
A rich, young, ruler came to Jesus and asked what he must do to inherit eternal life. He has everything but he does not have peace for his eternal destiny. He was told to sell on he has and give it to the poor. He left upset.
A landowner hires men to work at different times during the day and he gave each one the same amount of money. It’s all God’s grace. None of us deserve anything from God. The landowner’s sovereignty is a symbol of God’s sovereignty.
James and John approached Jesus and asked “when You come into Your kingdom, let one of us sit at Your right hand and the other at Your left.” Jesus asked if they could drink of His cup in life and be baptized with His baptism. They said yes, but Jesus said that it’s not His place to determine this. The other apostles were indignant (upset) because they didn’t want James and John to get ahead of them.
Master gives money to each of his stewards. One was able to makes 10, another 5, and the third none. The two good stewards were rewarded, the other punished. Be responsible and obedient with what you are given.
Almost half the gospel of John. All four gospels collectively, about one third of the gospels is on Passion Week; Passion week = suffering
“Palm Sunday” people laid their coats and palm branches on the roadway. This took place by Jesus’ own design, He set it up. He told His disciples to go get the donkey and bring it back to Him. The only record of Jesus having transportation other then walking.
Makes a reference of Jesus entering in on a donkey. The people recognized this as a Messianic action. They were expecting a political, military and different Messiah. The donkey is a symbol of peace. The were expecting a champion to ride in on a white horse
Jesus cursed the fig tree because it had no fruit. (The next day it was withered and dead) Leaves were an indication that there “should” be some figs, but there weren’t any. Finding leaves only would mean that the fig tree would bear no fruit that season. Fig tree represents the nation of Israel, they look religious on the outside but inside they reject their Messiah.
Ultimately God will cleanse the temple of our hearts through his resurrection.
Jesus’ response “a grain of wheat must fall onto the ground, land die. Jesus must fall into the ground and die for us to truly see Jesus"
People focused on the miracles, there was much unbelief. Many actually believed but would not confess it with their mouth in fear of being kicked out of the synagogue.
The day after Jesus cursed the fig tree they saw it withered and dead. If you have faith and ask to move mountains, you can do it.
The day after Jesus cursed the fig tree they saw it withered and dead. If you have faith and ask to move mountains, you can do it.
Jesus replies, “Was John the Baptizer’s authority from Heaven or from men?” John and Jesus’ authority come from Heaven, but the Sanhedrin do not know or believe that.
1. Father asks one son to work in the field, he says no. He asks the other and he replies, “Of course.” Jesus asks, “Which one did his father’s will?” 2. Vineyard owner sends servants to the vine growers who kill the servants. 3. Marriage feast of the kings son. Those who are invited do not come so he opens the invitation to the common people.
“Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar?” This is a trick question because if He says yes they can use that to get the people to go against Jesus because the Jewish people do not like the Romans; if He says no then they can get Him in trouble with the Romans. Jesus asks them to bring Him a coin and asks whose image is on the coin (Caesar). “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and give to God what is God’s.”
“Whose bride is the widow?” (Levirate Marriage - if a woman is married and her husband dies, if here are no children then a brother or close relative is obligated to marry her). Puzzling because the Sadducees do not believe in resurrection. Jesus says they are ignorant because in regards to resurrection in marriage, we will be like angels (who don’t marry). There is no marriage in Heaven besides Jesus being married to His bride, which is the church.
Pharisee asks, “which is the greatest commandment?” Jesus says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. The second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as you love yourself.” The pharisee agrees and Jesus says that there is hope for him, that he is not far from the Kingdom of God. Youngblood feels the man’s attitude had changed.
Jesus asks, “Whose son is Christ?” They answered the son of David. Jesus asks them to tell Him if the Messiah is the son of David, then why is David referring to the Messiah as his lord? In essence, a son would call his father “Lord”, a father would never call his son “Lord”. Jesus was born in the lineage of David but Jesus is the Son of God, which the religious leaders (Pharisees) did not understand.
When they are teaching from Moses’ seat, pay attention to what they are teaching but don’t do what they are doing; they do not practice what they preach; They do works to be seen by men - they love to be called “Rabbi”, like to have the chief seats and love to be praised by men; They go to the ends of the Earth to win a proselyte to make them 2X sons of Hell as they are - the Pharisees’ bad teachings are leading them away from God.
He knew that Jerusalem was headed toward destruction.
In the temple are people would give a large sum. A poor widow put in two small, copper coins, which is not a lot or more than others gave, Jesus says she gave the most. This is in terms of percentages because she gave all she had, which is total sacrifice.
Leather boxes with leather strips where Pharisees put pieces of paper in during prayer when they have mastered the Law - Jesus says they do these works to be seen by men.
Was the high priest but was removed from the position
Paradise; intermediate state of righteousness
In Jericho they are encountered by two blind men and cry out “King of David have mercy on us”; Jesus stops and asks what they want Him to for them
The high priest, unknowingly makes a prophesy. “Better for one man to die then for all the people to die.”
The final state of the wicked; what we call Hell
The intermediate state of the wicked in torment and flames
Father of Tabetha whom Jesus resuscitated
Intermediate state of the righteous
“The Land Beyond” meaning the land beyond the Jordan
one who converts from one religion to the other
Zaccheus climbed in a tree to see Jesus. Jesus tells him to come down and goes to his home for dinner. Zaccheus sold much of his goods and gave back to those he had cheated as evidence for his salvation. He is a son of Abraham.
