Polar compound
Molecules which contain polar covalent bonds
Hydrogen Bond
Type of attraction that holds two water molecules together
attractive force between particles of the same kind
attractive force between unlike substances
Adhesion and cohesion enable water molecules to move upward through narrow tubes against the force of gravity
Organic compounds
carbon atoms that are covalently bonded to other carbon atoms and to other elements as well, typically hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen
Functional groups
influence the properties of the molecules they compose
organic compound with a hydroxyl group attached to one of its carbon atoms
Monomers
molecules are built up from smaller, simpler molecules
Polymer
consists of repeated, linked units
Macromolecules
large polymers
Condensation reaction
monomers link to form polymers through chemical reaction
Hydrolysis
breakdown of some complex molecules, such as polymers
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
energy is available to cells in the form of certain compounds that contain a large amount of energy in their overall structure
Monosaccharide
monomer of a carbohydrate
Disaccharide
two monosaccharides can combine in a condensation reaction to form a dole sugar or a disaccharide
Polysaccharide
complex molecule composed of thre or more monosaccharides
organic compounds composed mainly of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen
Amino acids
monomer building blocks of proteins
Dipeptide
two amino acids bond
two amino acids form a covalent bond
Polypeptide
amino acids can bond to each other one at a time, forming a very long chain
Substrate
the reactant being catalyzed in enzyme reactons
Lipids
large, nonpolar organic molecules that do not dissolve in water
Fatty acids
unbranched carbon chains that make up most lipids
Hydrophilic
water loving
Hydrophobic
water fearing
composed of three molecules of fatty acid joined to one molecule of the alcohol glycerol
Phospholipids
two, rather than three, fatty acids joined by a molecule of glycerol
Wax
type of structural lipid
Steroid
molecules composed of four fused carbon rings with various functional groups attached to them
Nucleic acids
very large and complex organic molecules that store important imformatin in the cell
stores and transfers information that is essential for the manufacturing of proteins
Nucleotides
thousands of linked monomers
