Brainstem

the oldest part and central core of the brain, beginning where the spinal cord swells as it enters the skull; the brainstem is responsible for automactic survival funcitions

Aka pons and medulla

Cerebellum

the little brain at the rear of the brainstem; functions include proscessing sensory input and coordinating movement output and balance

Limbic system

Amygdala and Hypothalamus

Cerebral cortex

the intricate fabric of interconnected neural cells covering the cerebral hemispheres; the body's ultimate control and information processing center

Longitudina fissure

imaginary line that divides parietal and occipital lobes

corpus callosum

the large band of neural fibers connecting the two brain hemispheres and carrying messges between them

Frontal lobes

involved in planning, judgement, speaking, and muscle movement. Motor cortex is located here

parietal lobes

involved in math and spacial reasoning. Also recieves sensory input for touch and body position. Contains sensory cortex

Occipital lobes

recieves information from visual fields

temporal lobes

recieves auditory info

Motor cortex

an area at the rear of the frontal lobes that controls voluntary movements

Sensory Cortex

area at the front of the parietal lobes that registers and processes body touch and movement sensations

Computerized axial tomography ( CT or CAT)

x-ray of brain to find tumors head injuries skull fractures

MRI

radiowaves create an image that allow us to look at soft tissue of the brain

EEG

amplified readout of the electronic signals of your neurons

PET scan

shows brain activity by showing brains chemical consumption of glucose and shows hotspots of where brains is most active

DNA

a complex molecule containing the genetic info that makes up the chromosomes

Fraternal and Identical twins

Fraternal develop from seperate fertilized eggs, identical develop from single egg that splits into two and are genetically identical.

Right Brain

spatial, ability to percieve or organize things in a given space, juding distance, understanding geometric objects

modulates speech to make meaning clear

sense of self or relationships and recognizing faces, spaceing og words

Left Brain

reading, writing, speaking, math skills, comprehension skills, language logic
