Subclavian a.
Origin & Course

O- Right- brachiocephalic a. , Left- aortic arch
-deep to subclavian v and internal jugular
-posterior to sternoclavicular joint

C- arches up and lateral under the clavicle, behind anterior scalene m , over rib 1, enters axilla

3 parts- 1st- medial to anterior scalene
2nd part- behind anterior scalene
3rd part - lateral to anterior scalene, to lateral rib 1 border

Vertebral a.

1st branch of subclavian

enters transverse foramen of C6 to C1, pierces posterior atlantooccipital membrane and dura mater

through FM into cranial cavity

what are the 4 branches of the thyrocervical trunk?

inferior thyroid a. - supplies thyroid
transverse cervical a. - supplies trapezius
suprascapular a.
ascending cervical a. - supplies neck mm.

Where does the internal thoracic branch from?

Posterior side of the first part of subclavian a. (opposite thyrocervical trunk)

What does the costocervical trunk divide into?

branches on posterior side of 2nd part of subclavian a.

highest intercostal - provides posterior intercostal aa. to 1st and 2nd intercostal spaces
deep cervical - supplies semispinalis capitis and cervicis

Where does Common Carotid come from? Where does it divide

origin: right - brachiocephalic a.
left- aortic arch

divides into internal and external at superior border of thyroid cartilage

no branches
in carotid sheath (internal follows in carotid sheath)

External Carotid a.

upper border of thyroid cartilage to neck of condyle of mandible
gives off 8 branches
not in carotid sheath
covered by investing fascia in carotid triangle
deep to diagastric and stylohyoid mm.

Internal carotid a.

continues in carotid sheath to base of skull
principal a. of brain and orbit
no branches in neck
enters skull through carotid canal

Course of ophthalmic artery

branch as internal carotid emerges from cavernous sinus
enters orbit via optic canal
branches in orbit supply eyeball, lacrimal gland, extraocular mm.

Carotid sinus

dilation at terminal end of common carotid, root of internal carotid
- important in blood pressure regulation
