Theravada: No grace of the Gods, you must reach enlightenment by yourself
Mahayana: Grace of the Gods and Buddha is a fact; others are there to assist us
Key Virtue
Theravada: Wisdom
Mahayana: Compassion
What it takes to reach enlightenment:
Theravada: Reaching enlightenment is a full time job so join the Sangha (become a monk) -Enlightenment is not for the laity
Mahayana: Everyone, including laity and women, can reach enlightenment. You do not have to become a monk.
-Metaphysical speculation:
Theravada : Speculation is useless; it does not help you reach enlightenment
Mahayana: Speculation is not useless; they have elaborate cosmologies with many levels of heaven and hell
View of the Pali Scriptures
Theravada: Strict adherence to the Pali scriptures
Mahayana: They created new scriptures that have more authority than the Pali Canon
- How does each interpret the Buddha’s statement to “work out your own salvation”?
Theravada : They claim that their teachings go back to the Buddha; they are trying to reach enlightenment by following the Buddha’s footsteps
Mahayana: They are working out their own salvation by using prayer, metaphysical speculation, and emphasize rituals. Although they are “changing” the Buddha’s teachings, they are still adhering to him because they are not relying on past authorities/teachings/traditions What is the central focus of Vajrayana? Zen? Amida (pure land)? Vajrayana Buddhism
-Tantric ritual practices (using mandalas, visualizing deities, mantras, and mudras)
-“Mantras”-Words have power to get the Gods/spirits to help you
-Visualizing the deities
-Call upon the latent powers of the universe; everything is interdependent and connected
Zen Buddhism
-emphasizes being in the moment and awakening your Buddha nature
-try to not use words, but simply realize the truth
-getting out of our ordinary way of thinking koans (problems with no answers) and zazen (seated meditation)
Amida (Pure land) Buddhism
-Calling upon the power of Buddha to help you; we cannot escape sin by our own efforts
-Reciting the Buddha’s name, trusting in the Buddha’s grace
-Similar to Christianity in that we go to a heaven-like “pure land” after death
