Steps to checking an infant's pulse

How to determine if the heart is beating

Try to palpate the carotid pulse

Concussion

* Fell off his bike and sees to be unconscious for a few minutes

* Appears to want to vomit

* Should be advised to call an ambulance to take the patient to the hospital

Suspect Internal Bleeding

* Severly bruised

* Intense discoloration in the abdominal area and has nausea and vomitting, with a rapid weak pulse

* Advise patient to make an appointment with his doctor

Procedure after a patient states they see an "aura"

* Medical assistant takes patient to an empty exam room, put her on the floor with a pillow under her head, and unbuttoned the top buttons of her shirt

Activated Charcoal

A substance given to a personwho has ingested poison in the emergency room to prevent the poison from being absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract

"Funny" Irregular and spurting bleeding

* Bleeding profusely from the groin area

* Should advise patient to apply form pressure at the site of bleeding with a towel

* Have patient lie down, raise the leg, and call 911 for emergency medical services

Hypothermia

* After hiking on a very windy winter day

* Cold, wet, and numb feet, dazed and shivering

First thing a medical assistant should do for an emergency patient

Try to get the patient to respond by saying: "Are you okay?"

Heat Stroke

* Senior Citizen collapsed on a hot summer day

* Hot dry sking, body felt hot, with a rapid pulse and breathing

Purpose of first aid

To minimize or prevent infection and prevent further injury

Primary objectives when administering first aid

To maintain breathing

Practices to discourage the spread of blood and airborne diseases

Use a pocket mask during resue breathing, wear gloves or use another barrier,and wash your hands immediately

When checking for a pulse

Feel the cartoid pulse for 5 to 10 seconds
