Angiogenesis
Fromation of new blood vessels; one mechanism by which cancer spreads.
Apoptosis
Programmed cell death involving a cascadde of specific cellular events leading to death and destruction of the cell.
Benign
Form of tumor not capable of spreading throughout the body.
Bone Marrow Transplant
A cancer patient's stem cells are harvested and stored before chemotherapy beings. Then, the stored cells are returned to the patient by injection.
Cancer
Malignant tumor whose nondifferentiated cells exhibit loss of contact inhibition, uncrotrolled growth, and the ability to invade tissue and metastasize.
Carcinogen
Environmental agent that causes mutations leading to the development of cancer.
Carcinogenesis
Development of cancer.
Carcinoma
Cancer arising in epithelial tissue.
Cyclin
Protein that regularly increases and decreases in concentration during the cell cycle.
Growth Factor
Chemical signal the regulates mitosis and differentiation of cells that have receptors for it; important in such processes as fetal development, tissue maintenance and repair, and hematopoiesis; sometimes a cintributing factor in cancer.
Initiation
Mtation of a single cell that may lead to cancer development.
Leukemia
Cancer of the blood-forming tissues leading to the overproduction of abnormal white blood cells.
Lymphoma
Cancer of lymphatic tissue (reticular connective tissue).
Malignant
Form of tumor capable of spreading throughout the body.
Metastasis
Spread of cancer from the place of origin throughout the body; caused by the ability of cancer cells to migrate and invade tissue.
Mutagen
Agent, such as radiation or a chemical, that brings about a mutation.
Oncogene
Cancer-causing gene.
Oncologist
Physician who specializes in one or more types of cancers.
Oncology
The study of cancer.
Progression
In cancer, a second mutation that allows cells to invade surrounding tissues.
Promotion
In cancer, development of a group of cells from a single mutatied cell.
Proto-oncogene
Normal gene that can become an ocogene through mutation.
Sarcoma
Cancer that arises in muscles and connective tissue.
Telomere
Tip of the end of a chromosome.
Tumor
Cells derived from a single mutated cell that has repeatedly undergone cell division; benign tumors remain at the site of orogon, and malignant tumors metastasize.
Tumor Marker Test
Blood test for a substance, such as a tumor antigen, that indicates a patient has cancer.
Tumor-suppressor Gene
Gene that codes for a protein that ordinarily supresses cell division; inactivity can lead to a tumor.
