Map Scale

the ration or propotion of distances on the map the distances on the ground

Representative Fraction

Simple ratio in the form of 1:1,000,000.

The number on the left is the map

distance, the number on the right is the

ground distance.

Statement Scale

Expresses the ratio in words.

Bar Scale

A linear graphical scale drawn to show the estimation of the map distance to ground distance.

Thematic Maps

Map of any scale that presents a specific spatial distribution or single category of data.

Graduate circle, dot, isometric, isopleth, choropleth

Isometric Map

features lines that connect points registering equal values of the item mapped

Isopleth Map

Calculation refers not to a point but to an areal statistic

Lines conncet average vaules for unit areas

Choropleth Map

Average value of data studied per preexisting areal unit

Map Projection

the representation of a 3D object into 2D

Equidistant Projection

compass bearings are rendered accurately.

Azimuthal Projection

Compass directions are correct only from one central point

Portrays areas on Earth's Surface in their true proportions

Georeferencing

process of taking an image and assigning geographical corrdinates to it

Ellipsoid

Earth Spins, centrifugal forces cause slight flattening at the poles result in this shape
