Tight Junctions
seals neighboring cells together in an epithelial sheet to prevent leakage of molecules between them
Desmosome
joins the intermediate filaments in one epithelial cell to those in a neighbor
Adherens junction
joins an actin bundle in one epithelial cell to a similar bundle in a neighboring epithelial cell
gap junction
allows the passage of small water-soluble ions and molecules in the cytosol
endocytosis
process by which large particles are consumed by the cell
exocytosis
process whereby vesicles fromm inside the cell fuse with the plasma membrane and release their contents into the external membrane
actin filaments
thinnest of the filaments; occur in large numbers inside muscle cells where they serve as part of the machine that generates contractile forces
microtubules
thickest of the filaments; help pull the duplicated chromosomes in opposite directions and distribute them equally to the 2 daughter cells
