Issues in defining abnormality (why does it matter so much?) (4)
- can be problematic or flawed
- there is no ONE behavior that makes someone abnormal
- Elements of abnormality; suffering, malaptiveness, deviancy, violation, social discomfort, irrationality and unpredictability.
- society is always changing (what was once abnormal then, might not be now) (acceptance and tolerance of certain behaviors)
What are the Elements of abnormality?

Why do we define abnormality ( if there are so many issues)?
Nomenclature (naming system) enable us to structure information in a more helpful manner.
Organization allows for study of different disorders, we can learn more.
Establishes a range of problems that a mental health profession can address.
What is Cultural Relativism?
Position that one cannot apply to universal standards of normality or abnormality to all societies.
What are some importances of Cultural Relativism?
"Normal" isn't universal--it varies from culture to culture
Behaviors can only be abnormal relative to cultural norms.
Culture and gender influence expression and treatments of behaviors.
What are some classification Pros?
-Nomenclature
-Structure info
-Develop treatments for disorders
-Services for those greatest in need.
What are some classification Cons?
-can be innacurate
-potential for:
-stereotyping, labeling, stigma
-it is "short hand" and can lead to loss of information
-lose details about the person with the disorder.
What is stigma?
disgrace (for having a mental illness); fear of unwanted social contact or occupational consequences.
What is Prevalence?
The number of active cases in a population in any given period of time.
-1 year prevalence
-lifetime prevalence
What is point prevalence?
estimated portion of actual cases of the disorder in a given population at a given point in time
- prevalence figures usually expressed in percentages
What is incidence?
The number of new cases in a population over a given period of time. (typically 1 year)
-Figures tend to be lower than prevalence figures.
What is a clinical psychologist and can they prescribe medications?
Ph.D in Psychology. Have research and clinical skill specialization

What is a counseling Psychologist and can they prescribe medications?
Ph.D in Psychology and internship in marital or student counseling setting. Can't prescribe medications.
What is a School Psychologist and can they prescribe medications?
Doctoral training in child-clinical Psychology. Cannot prescribe medications.
What is a Psychiatrist and can they prescribe medications?
Trained as physicians, are M.D.s, have completed residency in psychiatric setting.

R.N. Certified. Can attain M.A and Ph.D in psychiatric nursing. Cannot prescribe medications.
What is a Clinical Social Worker and can they prescribe medications?
M.S.W. or Ph.D in social work with specialized training in mental health settings. Cannot prescribe medications
What is a Mental Health Counselor and can they prescribe medications?
works under professional direction, usually involved in crisis intervention. Cannot prescribe medications.
What is correlational research method?
A research strategy that examines whether and how variables go together (covary) without manipulating (changing) variables.
What is experimental (research) method?
Rigorous scientific procedure by which hypotheses are tested.
What is Experimental Research
Research that involves the manipulation of a given factor or variable with everything else held constant.
