single-member district plurality: individuals cast a single vote for a candidate in a single-member district

alternative voting: voters rank order in single-member districts. majority of 1st pref votes wins. eliminated candidates' votes are reallocated until majority

TRS
two-round system: in 1st round, candidates are guaranteed to 2nd round with certain # of 1st pref votes. most votes in 2nd round wins
SV
supplementary vote: single member districts, voters rank 1-2 candidates. abs majority of 1st pref votes wins. if no abs majority, 2nd pref votes from eliminated candidates are reallocated to top 2 candidates
SNTV
single nontransferable vote: multimember district, voters cast a single candidate centered vote
BV
block vote: multimember districts: voters have as many votes as there are seats
PBV
party block vote: voters cast a single party vote. one party wins all district seats. encourages minority representation.
PR
proportional representation: multimember districts, a quota or divisor based electoral system. goal to produce proportional outcomes
List PR
each party presents a list of candidates. party receives seats in proportion to overall share of votes
quota
# of votes that guarantees a seat
electoral tier
level at which votes are translated into seats. lowest tier = constituency, high tier = regional or national level
electoral threshold
minimum % of votes a party must win to gain representation. Legally imposed (formal threshold) or mathematically imposed (natural threshold)
apparentment
a provision in list PR system that allows 2+ parties to agree to combine their votes for the purposes of seat allocation. helps nonextremist parties prevent extremist parties from representation.
closed party list vs. open party list
order of candidates determined by party itself vs. voters choosing preferred party and candidates
free party list
voters can allocate multiple votes w/in a single party or across different party lists

split voting, ability to vote for candidates across party lists
cumulation
ability to give multiple votes to one candidate
mixed electoral system
voters elect reps through two different systems, one majoritarian and one proportional

application of an electoral formula does not depend on outcome produced by the majoritarian formula
