Lent's Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT)
based on Bandura. self-efficacy or human agency as the driving force for career choice. individuals choose a best fit between themselves and work env'ts.
top drivers of attraction
pay (base pay, raises based on performance), benefits (health, retirement), learning and development (advancement, learning opportunities), work env't (work/life balance, challenge, reputation of employer, caliber of coworkers).
top drivers of retention
pay (fairly paid compared to coworkers), learning and dev't (learn new skills, career opportunities), work env't (retains needed ppl, reputation of employer, manager's understanding, work/life balance, company's decisions, low stress env't).
extreme jobs
80+ hour work weeks, little vacation time, and on-call demands via Blackberry 24/7.
Family and Medical Leave Act
gives employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year to recover from illness, care for newborn, or tend to sick family, while guaranteeing job when they return. Only covers public sector or private business with 50+ employees (1/2 of US)
time-famine
caused by intersection of demands of work, home, and community.
occupational regret
especially common in black men. discrimination limited their job and education opportunities, so ideal jobs and salaries may not have been available to this cohort.
phased retirement
workers receive partial pensions, earn salary, but work is reduced. wisdom of older employees can be retained for 5-10 yrs beyond normal retirement.
metabolic syndrome
those who are sedentary in adult life are at 2x greater risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, type 2 diabetes. >50mill adults.
age-differentiated vs. age-integrated society
putting leisure off for retirement vs. pursuing education, work, & leisure regardless of age
positive ageism
portrayed on TV as middle class, white, free of major health issues, active, independent. makes widowed, socially isolated, minority elderly feel inferior.
Age Discrimination Employment Act (ADEA)
prohibits firing, forcibly
bona fide occupational qualifications (BFOQ)
permit mandatory retirement only when ALL workers in a specific job classification, because of age, cannot function safely and efficiently. police officers, fire fighters, airline pilots, foreign service officers.
