Pelvic Girdle- formed by:
the two ossa coxae which join anteriorly at the symphysis pubis and posteriorly to the sacrum
Sacroiliac Joint
connection between sacrum and ilium and is the only connection between the lower limb (appendicular skeleton) and the axial skeleton
process
a roughened bony prominence usually serving as the site of attachment of muscles or connective tissue structures
Trochanter
relatively large, blunt type of process found only on the femur
Tuberosity
a large, blunt or round process
Tubercle
a small, blunt or rounded process
Spine
a pointed projection of bone
Thigh
Between the hip and knee
Leg
Between the knee and ankle
Foot
Below the ankle
articulation
joint, where bones are joined
popliteal
back of knee
crural
the leg
tarsal
root or instep of the foot
plantar surface of the foot
sole
dorsum of the foot
top or superior surface
Hallux
big toe (1st digit of foot); has only 2 phalanges
appendicular
refers to appendages
articular bone markings
head, condyle, facet
crest
a prominent border that may be rough
fossa
a saucer-like depression (indentation)
foramen
a hole in a bone; size is extremely variable
head
a rounded articular surface joined to the shaft of the bone by a constriction, the neck
condyle
a smooth structure, either concave or convex, joined directly to the shaft of a long bone
facet
a smooth surface for articulation
true pelivs
inferior to the pelvic brim, located between the pelvic bones
false pelvis
the space above the pelvic brim and between the iliac bones
symphysis pubis
the joining of the two ossa coxae anteriorly (where the bodies of the two bubic bones join)
Os Coxae
a fusion of three bones 1. ilium 2.ischium 3. pubis
greater sciatic notch
this becomes a foramen when closed by the sacrospinous ligament, which extends from the sacrum to the ischial spine
acetabulum
a bowl-shaped articular cavity formed from all three bones
Obturator Foramen
formed by ischium and pubis
Head (femur)
articulates with the acetabulum
patellar surface (femur)
only articulation of the patella
medial epicondyle (femur)
the epicondyles include all the rough area just above the smooth articular condyles
Gluteal tuberosity (femur)
extends from the linea aspera toward the greater trochanter
medial condyle (femur)
articulates with the tibia
patella
a sesmoid bone that forms in the tendon of the quadriceps femoris muscle. It serves as a fulcrum, the support or point around which the action occurs, and it helps protect the knee joint.
sesmoind bone
a bone that forms in a tendon
tibial tuberosity
for the attachment of the patellar ligament
anterior border of the tibia
"shin bone"
medial malleolus (tibia)
inside "ankle" bone on the tibia
head of the fibula
articulates with the fibular facet, found on the posterolateral aspect of the fibia
lateral malleolus (fibula)
outside "ankle bone" on the fibula. Notice the distal end of the fibula fits into the fibular notch of the tibia
Talus
articulates with bone the tibia and the fibula
calcaneus
the heel bone
Digits 2-5
have 3 phalanges eac
