LIfting Mechanisms
Orographic, Convective, Convergent, Cyclonic or Frontal lifting that all has precipitation
Low Preassure
Clouds and Rain
HIgh Pressure
Clear Skys
Air masses
Large body of air with fairly uniformed temperature and moisture characteristics.
Source Regoin
Region where an air mass acquires its characteristics (Arctic, antarctic, polar, tropical, equatorial).
Are there source regions in the midlatitudes?
no, because this area is a battleground for air masses of different temperatures and moistures.
Front?
surface of contact between two unlike air masses.
HIgh pressure systems turn what direction?
Clockwise
Low Pressure systems turn what direction?
counter clockwise
Cold Front?
moving weather front along which a cold air mass moves underneath a warm air mass, liffting the warm air masses
what dose a cold front look like?
Cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds with thunderstorms.
Warm front
moving weather fron along which a warm air mass slides over the cold air mass, that produces stratiform clouds and precipitation.
what dose the warm front look like?
Stratus and nimbostratus clouds, steady precipitation, and sometimes thunderstorms.
Occluded front
weather front along whih a moving a cold overtakes a warm front, forcing the warm air mass aloft
Stationary front
two air masses are in contact but there is little or no relative motion.
cyclone storm
intense weather disturbance within a moving cyclone generating strong winds, cloudiness, and precipitation
Three types of cyclones?
wave, tropical, and tornado
wave cyclone?
happens in the midliatitudes, arctic, and antarctic zones
tropical cyclones?
tropical and subtropical zones
wave cyclone cont...
traveling cyclone of the midlatitudes involving interaction of cold and warm air masses along sharply defined fronts.
Tornado?
small very intense wind vortex with extremely low pressure in the center, formed below a dense cumulonimbus cloud in proximity to a cold front.
Tropical and equatorial weather systems
Air masses are warm and moist, no clearly defined fronts, intense convectional activity.
Types of tropical weather systems?
easterly wave, weak equetorial low, polar outbreaks, tropical cyclone
Tropical Cyclone
intense traveling cyclone of tropical and subtropical latitudes, accompanied by high winds and heavy rainfall, Isobars are also really low (950 mb)
storm surge
rapid rise of costal water level accompanying the onshore arrival of a tropical cyclone.
