primordialist arguments
culture is something that is objective and inherited, something that can be fixed since "primordial" times.
constructivist arguments
treat culture as something that is constructed or invented rather than inherited
cultural modernization theory
socioeconomic development does not directly cause democracy. rather, economic dev't produces certain cultural changes, such as the emerence of a civic culture, and these cultural changes ultimately produce democratic reform
civic culture
Almond and Verba. required for democracy. high level of interpersonal trust, preference for gradual social change, high support for existing political system, and high levels of life satisfaction.
data-generating process
the process by which data or observations are generated
experimental research
an analyst deliberately introduces variation into the data-generating process
non-experimental research
the researcher observes the data but does not have anything to do with how it is generated
observational data
data from non-experimental research (versus experimental data from experimental research)
natural experiment
nature, rather than the analyst, exogenously intervenes in the data-generating process. the analyst acts as if he intervened when analyzing the data.
laboratory experiment
an experiment conducted in a common location, such as a computer lab. the research controls all aspects of the environment except for behavior of the participants (subjects)
field experiments
experiment in which the interactions between the analyst and the subjects take place in the context of the subjects' everyday lives
internet experiments
an experiment that occurs over the internet

countries with a majority Catholic population are less likely to become and stay democratic
Protestant hypothesis
countries with a majority Protestant population are more likely to become and stay democratic
Islamic hypothesis
countries with a majority Muslim population are less likely to become and stay democratic
ethnic group hypothesis
countries with a large number of ethnic groups are less likely to become and stay democratic
religious group hypothesis
countries with a large number of religious groups are less likely to become and stay democratic
cultural group hypthesis
countries with a large number of cultural groups are less likely to become and stay democratic
ultimatum game
1. proposer has a pie
2. proposer offers % of pie to responder (responder knows exactly how much pie proposer has)
3. responder says yes and receives proposer's offer OR

dictator game
1. proposer has a pie
2. proposer offers % of pie to responder
3. responder is required to say yes to offer
homo economicus
the player who plays in spirit of self-interest. offers x% of the pie, x is just over 0.
modal offers
most common offers in experiments. modal offer for ultimatum game = 50%. modal offer for dictator game = 0%.
