Drugs and classes of drugs that decrease effectiveness of oral contraceptives: anticonvulsants, systemic antifungals, antiTB, antiHIV protesase inhib, maybe antibiotics. Important teaching points to increase effectiveness: take same time each day, use backup plan is taking one of the above drugs, follow instructions, know what to do if dose is missed. Signs of potential complications p. 183: ACHES: abd pain/liver/gall problem, chest pain/SOB/PE, HA/HTN/CVA, eye problems/HTN/CVA, severe leg pain/DVT. · Sterilization: tubal ligation or occlusion makes egg unavailable. Male vas deferens sealed/tied/cut so sperm is trapped. Permanent. No hormonal change.
