Allometry
Also called scaling; the differential proportion among various anatomical structures (e.g., the size of the brain in proportion to overall body size during the development of an individual). Scaling effects must also be considered when comparing species.
Anvils
Surfaces on which an object such as a palm nut, root, or seed is placed before being struck with another object such as a stone.
Altruism
Behavior that benefits another individual at some potential risk or cost to oneself.
Anthropocentric
Viewing nonhuman organisms in terms of human experience and capabilities; emphasizing the importance of humans over everything else.
Conspecifics
Belonging to the same species, to specifically understand traits between a species. (An example would be the focus on conspecific vocalizations within nonhuman primates that we have learned about in class.)
Core area
The portion of a home range containing the highest concentration and most reliable supplies of food and water. The ____________ is frequently the area that will be most aggressively defended.
Cortex

Encephalization
