What is anthropology
- The study of humankind., viewed from the perspective of all people and all time.
Four branches
- Cultural anthropology-
- Archaeology- focusing on the material remain
- Linguistic anthropology
- Physical anthropology - study all aspects of present and past human biology
What is cultural anthropology
studies the way humans interact and social issues
what is archaeology
focuses on the material remains of a society
what is linguistic archeology
studies how language is used in the society
why must a hypothesis be retested
toto test the validity of the hypothesis
What is physical anthropology
- The study of human biological evolution and human bicultural variation
Two key concepts of physical anthropology
- Every person is a product of evolutionary history, or all the biological changes that have brought humanity to its preset form.
- Each of us is a product of our own individual life history.
What makes us human and different from other animals
- Bipedalism
- Nonhoning canine
- Culture (material culture i.e tv, cars, house, tools)
- Hunting- i.e a group of men organize themselves to pursue animals for food.
- Speech- talking
- Dependence on domesticated foods
How do physical anthropologists know what they know
The scientific method
The scientific method
- Develop questions, gather evidence (data), data used to test hypotheses
- Identify the problem based on some earlier observations
- Stating the hypothesis
- Collecting the data (observations)
- Testing the hypothesis: rejection or acceptance
Culture
? Learned behavior that is transmitted from person to person
Biocultural approach
? the scientific study of the interrelationship between what humans have inherited genetically and culture.
Empirical
? Verified through observation and experiment.
why is cultural antropology important
helps us determine what was going on socially int eh time period which could effect groths development and a viriety of other things
