Epithelial Tissue
includes the surface covering of the body and linings of cavities and passageways

ball-and-socket joint in which the concave member rests on an elongated convex member

a joint that acts like a hinge, permitting oly flexation and extension

Synostosis
a process in which the structures of the skull become ossified as an infant develops
Craniosyntosis
premature ossification of cranial sutures
Premature Sagittal Synostosis
With premature sagittal synostosis, the child's head becomes peaked along the suture and elongated in back.
Apert Syndrom
a genetic condition, the affected child's sterotypic "peaked head" is the result of premature closure of the coronal suture, resulting in prounounced bulging along that articulation
Agonist
muscle contracted for purpose of a specific motor act
Antagonist
a muscle that opposes the contraction of another muscle (the agonist)
Synergists
muscles that stabilize structures
Origin
proximal attachment of a muscle; point of attachment of a muscle with relatively little movement
Insertion
the relatively mobile point of attachment of a muscle

the lower motor nueron and muscle fibers it innervates

stimulation by means of a nerve

Carrying toward a central location; generally sensory nerve impulses
Efferent
carrying away from a central point

a functionally defined group of organs
Muscular System
the anatomical system that includes smooth, striated and cardiac muscle
Skeletal System
the anatomical system that includes the bones and cartilages that make up the body
Respiratory System
the physical system involved in respiration, including the lungs, bronchial passageway, trachea, larynx, pharynx, oral cavity and nasal cavity
Phonatory System
the system including the laryngeal structures through which phonation is achived
Articulatory System
in speech science, the system of structures involved in shaping the oral cavity for production of the sounds of speech
Resonatory System
the portion of the vocal tract throught which the acoustical product of vocal fold vibration resonates
