naturalistic observation
research method in which the researchers observe and record behavior in its natural setting with without attmepting to influence or control it
four goals of science
description, explanation, prediction, influence,
experimental group
the group that is exposed to the independent variable, or the treatment
applied research
research that solves practical problems and improves the quality of life
theory
general principle or set of principles proposed to explain how a number of separate facts are related
independent variable
factor or condition that is deliberately manipulated in order to determine whether it causes any change in another behavior and mental processes

experimental method
the only research method that can be used to identify cause-effect relationships
basic research
research that seeks new knowledge and advances general scientific understanding
random assignment
each person in the sample has an equal chance of being in any one of the experimental of control groups
positive correlation
indicates 2 variables vary in the same direction
hypothesis
prediction about a cause-effect relationship between 2 or more variables
control group
the group that is exposed to the same experimental environment, but is not given the treatment
negative correlation
increase in the value of one variable is associated w/a decrease in the value of the other variable
correlation coefficient
+1.00 to -1.00
population
entire group of interest to researchers
case study
single individual or a small number of persons are studied in great depth, usually over an extended period of time
survey
method of study in whcih researchers use interviews and/or questionairse to gather information about the attitudes, beliefs, experiences, or behaviors of a group of people
representative sample
sample includes important subgroups in the same proportions as they are found in the populations
random sample
each person in the population has an equal chance of being chosen to participate
psychology
