population
individuals of a species within a given area
sub-population
(local populations) individuals more less frequently between if the habitat were homogeneous
distribution
geographic area occupied by a population ( population extent)
geographic range
distribution of a population in space
population size
the number of individuals in a population
population structure
encompasses a number of attributes, including the density and spacing of individuals within suitable habitat and the proportions of individuals of each sex and in each age class.
spacial structure
the part of population structure that encompasses the density and spacing of individuals
fundamental niche
the range of physical conditions over which species can persist
realized niche
the range of physical conditions a species can persist in after predators, pathogens, and competitors limit the distribution
dispersal limitation
The absence of a population from suitable habitat because of barriers to dispersal
ecological niche modeling
A method of predicting the distribution of a species from limited information about the range of conditions where individuals of that species are known to occur
ecological envelope
The catalog of ecological conditions
dispersion
the spacing of individuals with respect to one another within the geographic range of a population
clumped
(form of dispersion) individuals are found in discrete groups
spaced
(form of dispersion) individuals maintain a minimum distance between themselves and their neighbors
random
(form of dispersion) individuals in a population distributed in a completely uniform environment without regard to the positions of others in the population
density
(in relation to population)the number of individuals per unit of area
ideal free distribution
individuals move from better to poorer patches until each patch has the same value for individual fitness, regardless of the intrinsic patch quality
meta population models
a set of sub-populations occupying patches of a particular habitat type between which individuals move occasionally
habitat matrix
intervening habitat which serves only as a barrier to the movement of individuals between subpopulations
source-sink models
add differences in the quality of suitable habitat patches
source populations
a subpopulation that produces an excess of individuals over the number needed to maintain itself and from which there is net emigration
sink populations
produce too few offspring locally to make up for those that die, so rely on immigration to maintain population totals
landscape model
considers the effect of differences in habitat quality within the habitat matrix
lifetime dispersal distance
indicates how far individuals move, on average, from their birthplace to where they reproduce
neighborhood size
the number of those individuals, which is estimated by the lifetime dispersal area time the population density
macroecology
The study of patterns in the sizes of the geographic ranges of populations and in the densities and distributions of individuals within those ranges
energy equivalence rule
Principle that populations tend to consume about the same amount of food per unitof area, thus having similar effects on population and ecosystem processes, regardless of the size of individuals.
