cardiovascular disease (CVD)

disease of the heart and /or blood vessels

hypertension

sustained high blood pressure

atherosclerosis

hardening or stiffening of the arteries as plaque accumulates at injury sites in the inner linings of arteries

arterial stenosis

a narrowing of the inner channel of arteries & smaller arterioles due to the build up of a sludgelike layer of fatty, waxy debris

plaque

a pinpoint area of fatty, waxy debris that accumulates at a site along the inner wall of an artery or arteriole.

systolic pressure

the pressure being applied to the walls of the arteries when the heart contracts

diastolic pressure

the pressure applied to the walls of the arteries during the heart's relaxation phase

coronary artery disease (CAD)

atherosclerosis in the main arteries that supply supply oxygen to the other materials to the heart muscle. (also called Coronary Heart Disease)

myocardial infarction (MI)

medical term for heart attack

ischemia

a damaging reduction in the blood to a region of the heart, brain, or other organ

angina pectoris

chest pain due to ischemia, or reduction in blood flow to the heart muscle and surrounding tissues

arrhythmia

irregular heartbeat

fibrillation

a sporadic, quivering heartbeat pattern that results in very inefficient pumping of blood

congestive heart failure

cardiovascular disease in which the heart muscle is damaged or overworked.

congenital heart disease

heart disease present at birth

stroke

sudden loss of function in a region of the brain caused by blockage in or rupture of a blood vessel, leading to oxygen deprivation, cell damage, or death
