Psychotherapy

an interaction between a therapist and a client that applies psychological principles to affect the clients thoughts, feelings, and/or behavior

Psychoanalysis

Sigmund Freud

Early childhood experiences, internal conflicts

Goals: gain insight into conflict,reveal repressed urges, identify unconscious thoughts

Methods: free association, transference (response), dream analysis

Modern: focus on feelings

Internal Conflicts

id: pleasure principle

ego: reality principle

superego: moral principle

Humanistic therapy ( Client-centered)

Focus on here and now

Empathy

Control own destinies

Natural tendency toward growth

Goals: self exploration, self acceptance, help them help themselves

Methods: unconditiona positve regard, genuineness, encourage to develop to full potential

Behavioral Therapy

Decrease symptoms by changing behavior

Uses principles of learning to promote change

Goals: promote desired behaviors, stop maladaptove behaviors

Methods: systematic desensitization, flooding, operant conditioning, aversive conditioning

Aversive Conditioning

controversial procedure in which painful or aversive stimuli are paired with unwanted impulses

For example, to help control alcohol intake, different alcoholic beverages can be paired with drug-induced nausea and vomiting or with electric shock.

Operant Conditioning

Token economy: positive reinforcement

Social skills training: role playing

Systematic Desensitization

For phobias

Relaxation technique

Gradually move closer to fear (imagine, look at, see live, touch)

Become more comfortable = no more fear

Flooding

Instead of gradual exposure, client is introduced to fearful stimulus/ situation all at once

Group Therapy

Several clients with similar problems

Advantages: economical, more life experiences to learn from, group support, people have similar problems, provide hope for others, practice social skills

Biological Treatments

Apply knowledge of Biology to treat psychological issues

ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) for major depression; last resort. SIDE EFFECT = TEMPORARY MEMORY LOSS

Drug Therapy: anti-anxiety, anti psychotics, anti depressants (increase seratonin)
