Criteria for disorders

Syndrome
groups or clusters of related symptoms that are characteristic of a disorder
Axis I disorders
clinical disorders that are inconsistent with personality
Axis II disorders
personality disorders & mental retardation
Comorbidity
having two or more disorders at the same time
GAD
generalized anxiety disorder
-common anxiety disorder of excessive anxiety lasting eight months
Panic attacks
sudden, short period of extreme anxiety that involves both psychological and physiological symptoms and intense fear
Panic disorder
an anxiety disorder characterized by panic attacks and persistent anxiety
Agoraphobia
anxiety disorder involving fear of being in places in which escape might be difficult or help may not be available should a panic attack occur
PTSD
post-traumatic stress disorder:
type of anxiety disorder triggered by exposure to a traumatic event
Phobia
anxiety disorder of ongoing and irrational fear of particular object

Social phobia
(aka: social anxiety disorder)
fear of humiliation in the presence of others; characterized by intense self-consciousness
OCD
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder:
compulsive thoughts lead to obsessive behaviors
Obsession
unwanted thought, word, image that repeatedly comes into a person's mind and causes distress
Compulsion
repetitive behavior performed in response to uncontrollable urgers
Impulsive control disorder
disorder related to OCD in which person feels intense, repetitive desire to perform certain behaviors
Diathesis-stress model
explanation for the origin of psychological disorders:
biological predispositions + stressful environment = psychological disorders
GABA
neurotransmitter found to be deficient in people prone to anxiety
Mood disorders
category of psych disorder characterized by sever disturbances in emotional behavior
Major depressive disorder
mood disorder:
low mood, lack of motivation, feelings of unworthiness that last for at least two consecutive weeks
Dysthymia
mood disorder:
form of depression that is milder in intensity
Bipolar disorder
mood disorder:
substantial mood fluctuations that cycle between very low and very high moods
Maniac episodes
mood cycle in bipolar disorder involving
-increased energy
-sleeplessness
-irritability
-increased sex drive
-euphoria
Cyclothymia
mild form of bipolar disorder
Serotonin
neurotransmitter that is reduced in cases of bipolar disorder
Psychotic disorder
disorders of thought and perception characterized by inability to distinguish between real and imagined perceptions
Schizophrenia
psychotic disorder:
significant disturbances in thought, emotion and problems with perception

nonresponsiveness, emotional flatness, immobility, inability to complete tasks

problems with working memory, attention, learning, problem solving, processing, and speech

speech of people with schizophrenia; follows grammatical rules but makes little sense
Paranoid schizophrenia
subtype of schizophrenia:
preoccupatoin with delusions and hallucinations
Catatonic schizophrenia
subtype of schizophrenia:
extreme immobility, excessive activity, mutism, parroting
Undifferentiated schizophrenia
subtype of schizophrenia:
general symptoms of delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized speech
Disorganized schizophrenia
subtype of schizophrenia:
disorganized speech and behavior
Personality disorders
maladaptive and inflexible patterns of cognition, emotion, and behavior
