Public Good
Shared beliefs of poli community as to what goals govt ought to attain
Ideology
Set of fixed, predictable ideas held by politicians and citizens on how to serve the public good
Anarchism
System opposing the existence of any type of govt--often through violence/lawlessness
Libertarianism
Based on belief that govt is a necessary evil that should interfere w/individual freedom and privacy as little as possible (aka minimalism)
Monarchism
Power should be concentrated in one person who rules by decree
Royalist
Favors absolutism or rule by an all powerful monarch
Fascism
Totalitarian system headed by popular charismatic leader. Controlled violence. Complete social+political control
Nazism
National Socialism--form of fascism based on extreme nationalism, militarism, and racism
Capitalism
Individuals own the means of production and can acquire unlimited personal wealth. Holds that govts shouldn't impose unnecessary restrictions on econ activity and laws of supply and demand can regulate the econ
Collectivism
Public good is best served by common ownership of political community's means of production and distribution
Socialism
Favoring collective and govt ownership over individual or private ownership
Marxism
Future belonged to industrial underclass and a classless society would eventually replace one based on classes tied to property and ownership
Proletarian
Marxist theory, a member of the working class
Bourgeoisie
Capitalist class
Law of Capitalist Accumulation
Rule that stronger capitalists motivated by greed would eventually eliminate weaker competitors and gain control of the market
Law of Pauperizaiton
Capitalism has a built-in tendency toward recession and unemployment thus workers inevitably become surplus labor
Democratic socialism
Govt based on pop. elections, public ownership and control of main sectors of the econ and broad welfare programs in health and education to benefit citizens
Gradualism
Major changes in society should take place slowly through reform rather than revolution
Welfare State
State whose govt is concerned w/providing for the social welfare of its citizens and does so w/specific public policies like health insurance, minimum, wage, and housing subsidies
Liberal
Emphasizes individualism, equality, and civil rights above other values
Conservative
Emphasizes prosperity, security, and tradition above other values
Commercial Republic
(Alexander Hamilton) democracy based on econ vitality, capitalistic principles, and private enterprise free of undue state regulation
Laissez-Faire Capitalism
Views the marketplace, unfettered by state interference, as the best regulator of the econ life of a society
Neoconservative
Advocate strong national defense, decisive military action in face of threats of provocations, pro Israeli policy in Middle east, min govt interference in econ. Opposed to federal regulation of business and banking
War on Terror
Defeating international terrorist organizations, destroying terrorist training camps, and bringing terrorists to justice
