what is a hydrocarbon?
compounds that contain only the elements carbon and hydrogen
what is the simplest hydrocarbon?
methane--one carbon w/ 4 hydrogens attached
aliphatic hydrocarbons consist of what three families?
alkanes, alkenes and alkynes
what are alkanes?
hydrocarbons that only consist of single bonds
what are normal alkanes?
alkanes that exist without branched carbon chains
what are the first 12 alkanes?
methane, ethane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, decane, undecane, dodecane
what is the general formula for alkanes?
CnH2n+2
what is a methylene group?
CH2
what is a homologous series?
a series of compounds that differ by the addition of methylene groups
what is a Newman projection?
a type of planar projection along one bond--the 'projected' bond
looks like a circle with spokes coming out of it
what is the conformation of a molecule?
the spatial arrangement of its atoms when all of its dihedral angles are specified--used in Newman projections--average conformation is about 600
what is the difference between staggered conformation and eclipsed conformation?
staggered is (usually) 600 angles (can also be 1800 and 3000), eclipsed is when the groups are directly on top of each other--00 angles--staggered conformations are the MOST stable!
what is torsional strain?
the repulsion between the C--H bonds
what is an internal rotation?
a rotation about a bond--not to be confused with a molecular rotation)
when is internal rotation most probable?
at high temperatures b/c of the higher liklihood of collision b/n molecules
what is a gauche conformation?
conformations w/ a dihedral angle of 600 and 3000 b/n the 2 C--CH3 bonds
what is an anti conformation?
when the dihedral angle is 1800
what is the van der Waals radius?
a measure of an atom's effective size--energy is required to force two nonbonded atoms together more closely than the sum of their van der Waals radii
the extra energy required for the van der Waals radii to be pushed further togther is called
van der Waals repulsion
