Law of Superstition States That in a sequence of undisturbed sedimentary strata, oldest layers will be at the bottom and the youngest will be on top. 2.Law of cross-cutting relationships States that an igneous rock is younger than rocks it has introduced intruded into, out across. 3.Law of included fragments States that pieces of one rock form in another must be older than the rock in which they are found. Unconformity (gaps in the time) a place in the rock record where layers of rock(evidence of geologic times) of missing Absolute time - Uses a "clock" radioactive decay -the process of atom spontaneously changing into different element. original element = Parent Isotope daughter isotope =The product of the decay types Alpha-α ( subtract 2 protons (the weight decreases by 2) Beta-β (Add 1) View chart
30.1 Natural Selection The theory that organisms that survive to produce offspring have inherited the most favorable traits for survival in a particular environment. ~ like the white rabbit being "weeded" out in Colorado. - Evolution The process of change that produces new life forms over time. A. Changes over the past 3.8 billion years include the formation of Earth's Crust, the appearance and disappearance of landforms, etc. 30.2 The Precambrian and Paleozoic A. Precambrian includes Archean and Proterozoic Eons and covers early 3.5 billion years of Earth's History. 1.Probably single cell organisms and formation of Earth's crust. B. Precambrian time is characterized by active plate movements, simple life forms and glaciation. 1.Stromatolites a.Layers of cyanobacteria and sediment columns about 6 feet tall. C. The Paleozoic Era started around 540 million years ago and covers 6 periods( refer to chart) it marks the beginning of abundant fossil records. D. The Ordovician Era 1.Index Fossil a.Graptolite fossils i. little creatures that lived in groups and formed tapered columns. E. Silvrian 1.index fossil a.Eurypterid i. a 2 foot long water scorpion F . Devonian Era 1.index fossil a. Ammonoid i. A group of extinct cephalopod molluscs with coiled shells. There shells were made into chambers. G. Permian Era 1.index fossil a.nothing i.marked by a sudden rapid decrease in water, most creatures were water based so they died. 2.Ice age begins a.kills a lot of other life 30.3 The Mesozoic Era A. began 278 million years ago and covers 180 million years. 1.characterized by dinosaur rise and fall. B. Triassic Period 1.Coelophysis a.Late triassic period 2.Pangea breaks apart 3.variety of plants develop 4.Index fossil a.Ammonite 5.trees develop a.A lot of Magnolias 30.4 Earth's Recent History A. The Cenozoic Era began about 65 billion years ago and has two periods 1.Teritary a. characterized by rise of mammals and humans 2.Lucy a. The name of an old skeleton 14.5 million years old.
