Independent Variable
The variable that is manipulated.
Dependent Variable
The variable that is measured.
Posititve Reinforcement
Any event whose presence increases the likelihood that ongoing behavior will happen again.
Negative Reinforcement
Any event whose reduction increases the likelihood that the behavior will happen again.
Conditioning
When a normally neutral stimulus is presented, the desired response will occur.
Hypothesis
An educated guess.
Population
The subjects that can be in your experiment.
Sample
A selected case from a larger population.
Random Sample
Sample in which each potential subject has an equal chance of being selected.
Biased Sample
Sample that doesn't represent the whole population.
Central Nervous System
Brain and spinal cord.
Cerebellum
Right and left hemispheres. Handles reflexes and balance.
Cerebral Cortex
Outer covering of the cerebrum. Handles perception, memory, and cognitivity.
Sensation
The capacity to have feelings or percpetions.

Afterimage
Sense experience that occurs after a visual image has been removed.
Blind Spot
A place on the retina where the axons of all the eye neurons leave the eye and where there are no receptors.
Hue
Color.
Brightness
Nearness of a color to white as oposed to black. The whiter, the brighter.
Structuralism
Whilhelm Wundt- Stripped perception of its association to find teh very atoms of thought.
Functionalism
William James- Sensations can't be separated from mental associations.
Behaviorism
Psychology should be concerned with only observable and measurable behavior.
Classical Conditioning
John B Watson- like Pavlov- Giving an otherwise neutral stimulus a desired response.
Operant Conditioning
B.F. Skinner- Integrated positive and negative reinforcement.
Correlational Research
Based on the naturally ocurring relationship between two or more variables.
Experimental Research
Using the scientific method to compare experimental hypotheses.
Case Studies
Intensive description and analysis of a single individuals or a few individuals.
Naturalistic Observation
Systematic study of human or animal behavior in a natural setting other than a laboratory.
