Phospholipid Bilayer
a two-layered arrangement of phosphate and lipid molecules thatform a cell membrane, the hydrophobic lipid ends facing inwardand the hydrophilic phosphate ends facing outward. also called lipid bilayer
The Fluid-Mosaic Model of the Cell Plasma Membrane
The fluid-mosaic model describes the plasma membrane of animal cells. The plasma membrane that surrounds these cells has two layers (a bilayer) of phospholipids (fats with phosphorous attached), which at body temperature are like vegetable oil (fluid). And the structure of the plasma membrane supports the old saying, “Oil and water don’t mix.”
Osmosis
the tendency of a fluid, usually water, to pass through asemipermeable membrane into a solution where thesolvent concentration is higher, thus equalizing theconcentrations of materials on either side of themembrane.
Simple diffusion
refers to a process whereby a substance passes through a membrane without the aid of an intermediary
Hypertonic
Having the higher osmotic pressure of two solutions.
Hypotonic
having a lowerosmotic pressure than that of a specified, generallyphysiological, solution
isotonic
noting or pertaining tosolutions characterized by equal osmotic pressure.
Facilitated diffusion
in cell biology, a process by which substancesare transported across cell membranes bymeans of protein carrier molecules; also calledfacilitated transport
Passive Transport
transport of a substance across a cell membrane by diffusion;expenditure of energy is not required
Active Transport
transport of a substance across a cell membrane by diffusion;expenditure of energy is required
Concentration gradient
the gradual difference in concentration of a dissolved substancein a solution between a region of high density and one of lowerdensity.
Hydrophobic
having little or no affinity for water.
Hydrophilic
having a strong affinity for water.
