Exocrine Glands
-Ducts- Branched or unbranched
-Shape of the secretory portion of the gland
Descrive the General make- up of a tissue
Common embryonic origin
Function together to carry out specialized activities
Four primary Tissue types
Epithelial
Connective
Muscular
Nervous
Major Function Of Epithelial Tissue
Covers body surfaces and lines hollow organs, body cavities, duct, and forms glands
Function of Connective tissue
~Enclosing and Separation other tissues
~Connection tissues to one another
~Supporting and moving parts of the body
~storing compounds
~cusiniong and insulation
~transporting
~protecting
Epithelium
Simple Squamous
~Filtration or diffustion
Simple Cubodial
~Thyroid gland and kidneys
~Secretion and absorption
Simple Columnar
~Secrete mucus
~Ciliated or contain Microvilli
Pseudostratified
~All cells attached to basement membrane, but some do not reach apical surface
Types of Epithelial
covering and lining epithelium
Glandular Epithelium
Endocrine
~Secrete hormones into blood stream
~important in Homeostasis
Exocrine
Secretes mucus into ducts that empty onto the surface of epithelium
Glands based on structure
Branched or unbranced
Shape of the secretory portion of the gland
Merocrine gland
cells of the gland produce secretions by active transport
~ Produce vesicles that contain secretory products, and the vesicles empty their contents into the duct through exocytosis
Apocrine Gland
secretory products are stored in the cell near the lumen of the duct. A protion of the cell near the lumen containing secretory products is pinched off the cell and joins secretions produced by a merocine process
Holocrine
Secretory products are stored in the cells of the gland.
Entire cells are shed by the gland and become part of the secretion. The lost cells are replaced by other cells deeper in the gland
Connective TISSUES
~Enclsoing and separating other tissues
~ Connecting tissues to one another
~Supporting and moving parts of the body
~Storing compunds
~Coushining and insulating
~Transporting
~protceting
Connective tissues cells
Fibroblasts
Secrete fibers and components of ground substance
Adipocytes (fat cells)
Store triglycerides (fat)
Mast cells
Produce histamine
White blood cells
Immune response
Macrophages
Engulf bacteria and cellular debris by phagocytosis
Plasma cells
Secrete antibodies
Three main components of the extracellular Matrix of connective tissue
Collagen
Elastic
Reticular
Explain how adult connective tissue is classified.
amount of collagen present
Give an example of each type of connective tissue; describe its characteristic functions, and its location in the body.
null
Discuss the three types of muscle tissue by describing their general structures, locations in the body, and functions.
null
Describe the functional specialty of nervous tissue.
null
Explain the functions of neurons and neuroglia.
null
