occurs when part of the brain stem gets damaged, all muscles are paralyzed and you know whats going on but cant communicate

Automatic Processing
when you know a task so well that you do them without conscious effort
Controlled Processing
slower than automatic, but helps to perform in complex or novel situations
Persistent Vegetative State
when you appear to be awake by opening your eyes and you appear to be asleep when you close your eyes you appear to be sleeping, but you dont respond to your surroundings for more than a month
Minimally Conscious State
between the vegetative state and full consciousness, and you make some deliberate movements

when you have a though in your unconscious and your conscious doesn't want to say it, but it slips out.

Blind Sight
a condition in which a person who experiences some blindness because of damage to the visual system continues to show evidence of some sight but it is unaware of being able to see at all.
4 Stages of Sleep
1- drifting off to sleep

Insomnia
a sleep disorder in which peoples mental health and ability to function is compromised by their inability to sleep.
Sleep Apnea
a disorder in which person stops breathing for temporary periods while asleep, resulting in loss of oxygen and sleep disruption
Narcolepsy
a disorder in which excessive sleepiness occurs during normal waking hours

Restorative Theory
says that sleep allows brain and body to rest and to repair themselves
Circadian Rhythms
a roughly 24-hour cycle in the biochemical, physiological, or behavioural processes of living entities
Circadian Rhythm Theory
proposes that sleep has evolved to keep animals quiet and inactive during times of the day when there is greatest risk of danger, usually at night

Activation-Synthesis Hypothesis
dreams are a random event caused by firing of neurons in the brain
Evolved Threat Rehearsal Strategy
when dreams sometimes simulate threatening events to allow people to rehearse coping strategies
Post-hypnotic suggestion
when the hypnotist suggests that after the hypnosis session, the person will experience a change in memory, perception, or voluntary action and usually does not remember suggestion

believes hypnotized people behave how they expect hypnotized people to behave even if those expectations are faulty
Dissociation Theory of Hypnosis
views the hypnotic state as an altered state, in which conscious awareness is separated from other aspects of consciousness

when you focus attention to one thing

let your thoughts flow freely, paying attention to them but trying to not react to them
Transcendental Meditation
relaxing and refreshing the mind and body through the silent repetition of a mantra

a mind-altering substance that changes the brain's neurochemistry by activating neurotransmitter systems

psychoactive ingredient in weed
MDMA
Ecstasy, producing energizing effect similar to stimulants but also causes slight hallucinations
Physical Dependence
when failing to ingest a substance leads to feelings of withdrawal (anxiety, tension, craving)
Psychological Dependence
refers to habitual and compulsive substance use despite the consequences
Tolerance
is when a person needs to consume more of a drug to achieve the same subjective effect.
Reticular Formation
part of the brain that is involved in actions such as awaking/sleeping cycle, and filtering incoming stimuli to discriminate irrelevant background stimuli.
