What is nonverbal communication?
the behaviors and characteristics that convey meaning without the use of words
-some accompany words
-some convey meaning on their own
What are nonverbal channels?
the various behavioral forms that nonverbal communication takes
-we rely on clues from nonverbal channels to make sense of a situation when talking is not an option
What is deception:
the act of leading someone to believe something you know to be untrue
What are the six basic emotions that are communicated through facial expressions?

What are immediacy behaviors?
nonverbal signals of affection and affiliation
What are facial displays?
facial expressions

1. revealing identity
2. signaling attractiveness
-symmetry and proportionality

What is symmetry and proportionality?
symmetry: the similarity between the left and right sides of your face
proportionality: the relative size of your facial features
What are oculesics?
the study of eye behavior
- eye contact: used to signal attraction, gain credibility, persuade, and intimidate
-pupil dilation is a reaction to different social situations and conversational partners
(when we experience excitement, sexual arousal, anxiety, fear)
What is kinesics?
the study of movement
What are gesticulations?
the use of arm and hand movements to communicate
What are emblems?
any gesture that has a direct verbal translation
What are illustrators?
gestures that clarify the verbal message
What are affect displays?
gestures that communicate emotion
What are regulators?
gestures that control the flow of conversation
What are adaptors?
gestures one uses to satisfy some personal need
What is haptics?
the study of how we use touch to communicate
What are the 5 types of touch?
1. affectionate: hug
2. caregiving: dentist/hair cut
3. power and control: hand on lower back for guidance
4. aggressive
5. ritualistic: shaking hands
What are vocalics or paralanguage?
characteristics of the voice

1. pitch
2. inflection (variation in pitch)
3. volume

8. accent (patterns of pronouncing vowels/consonants)

What are olfactics?
our sense of smell
-operates subtly but powerfully to influence our reaction to others
-memory: olfactic associations
- we are drawn to people
What is proxemics?
the scientific study of spatial use
What are the 4 different spatial zones?
1. intimate (0-1 1/2 ft): our closest most intimate friends, family members, and romantic partners
2. personal (1 1/2-4 ft): other friends and relatives
3. social (4-12 ft): customers, casual acquaintances
4. public (12-25 ft): someone is giving a speech or performing in front of large audience
What is the halo effect?
we attribute positive qualities to attractive people
-pressure to be attractive can lead to or worsen eating disorders
What is chronemics?
the way we use time as communicators
-messages about value
-messages about power
What are artifacts?
the objects and visual features within an environment that reflect who we are
-can also reflect how we wish to be seen by others
