amodal information
information that can be presented in different senses
attention
the process by which we select information that will be processed furthur
auditory threshold
refers to the quietest sound that a person can hear
cones
neurons located in the retina of the eye which detects wavelengths i.e color
differentiation
mastery of component skills of intricate motions
dynamic systems theory
motor development involves many distinct skills that are organized and reorganized over time to meet the demands of specific tasks
fine-motor skills
associated with grasping, holding, and manipulating objects
habituation
phenomenon in which a novel stimulus is presented, babies pay much attetnion, but they pay less attention as it becomes more familiar
integration
the process of combining intricate motions in a proper sequence to make a coherant, working whole
interposition
nearby objects partially obscure more distant objects
intersensory redundancy theory
theory that an infant's perceptual system is particularly attuned to amodal information that is presented in multiple sensory modes
kinetic cues
how motion is used to estimate depth
linear perspective
parallel lines come together at a single point in the distance
locomotion
the process of learning to move about the world
motion parallax
refers to the fact that nearby moving objects move across our visual fields faster than those at a distance
motor skills
coordinated movements of the muscles and limbs
orienting response
when presented with a strong or unfamiliar stimulus, this usually occurs; a person startles, fixes the eyes on the stimulus, and shows changes in heart rate and brain-wave patterns
pictorial cues
cues for depth that depend on the arrangement of objects in the environment; named because they're the same cues that artists use to convey depth in drawings and paintings
relative size
nearby objects look substantially larger than objects in the distance
retinal disparity
based on the fact that the left and right eyes often see slightly different versions of the same scene
sensory and perceptual processes
the means by which people receive, select, modify, and organize stimulation from the world
size constancy
the realization that an object's actual size remains the same despite changes in the size of its retinal image
texture gradient
the texture of objects changes from coarse but distinct for nearby objects to finer and less distinct for distant objects
toddler
11-month olds; named so by the way they "toddle" when they walk
visual acuity
defined as the smallest pattern that can be distinguished dependable
visual cliff
a glass-covered platform; on one side a pattern appears directly under the glass, but on the other it appears several feet below the glass
visual expansion
refers to the fact that as an object moves closer, it fills an ever-greater proportion of the retina
