Minerals are naturally occurring solid, geologically formed,
ordered atomic arrangement, inorganic
Atoms in minerals are
specifically oredered
Rocks are made from minerals – most have more than one kind.
Crystal Lattice: ordered atoms in crystals form a 3-D
lattice.
Seeing into crystals –
when you can “see” atoms
Polymorphs: same
composition but different crystal structure – reveal importance of bond type
Crystals grow as atoms and attach to mineral surfaces,
growth starts from a central seed crystal
Grow by: solidification
from a melt, precipitation from solution, solid-state diffusion
Physical properties of mineral
Characteristics determined
by your 5 senses
Depend on:
chemical composition, crystal structure
Common:
color, streak, luster, hardness, fracture, cleavage
Streak: color of a mineral crush on porcelain
Luster: the way a mineral scatters light (metallic, nonmetallic)
Hardness: scratching resistance of a mineral
Specific Gravity: related to density (mass per volume)
Crystal Habit: ideal shape of crystal faces
Crystal Form: minerals vary in crystal development
Euhedral – good crystal
faces; grown in open cavity
Anhedral – no crystal
faces; grown in tight space
Subhedral – between the
two
Fracture: minerals lack places of weakness (no cleavage)
Cleavage: tendency to break along places of weakness (no fracture)
Silicate minerals: rock-forming minerals (dominate Earth’s
crust)
Gems – minerals with special value (rarity & beauty)

Diamonds originate under extremely high pressure
