Define gravity, energy of motion, kinetic energy and inertia.
gravity- force that pulls you to center of the earth
energy of motion- object moves and acquires energy, the faster the car the more kinetic energy
kinetic energy- same as energy of motion
inertia- in proportion to speed squared
energy of motion- object moves and acquires energy, the faster the car the more kinetic energy
kinetic energy- same as energy of motion
inertia- in proportion to speed squared
A vehicles speed when going downhill does what?
increases
Energy of motion is another way of explaining what?
Kinetic energy
Because of energy of motion, when a vehicle's speed doubles, the vehicle needs how much stopping distance?
4 times the distance
The gripping action that keeps a tire from slipping on the roadway is what?
friction
When braking and turning, you are using what?
friction
the outside edge
All wheel drive means what?
all wheels are used at the same time.
Good shock absorbers do what for the vehicle?
help keep a short stopping distance. worn tires, shock absorbers, or brakes makes a vehicle have longer stopping distances.
In wet weather, with the temp near the frezzing point, you should be extra careful where?
Bridges
A behicle driven into a curve tends to do what?
Go straight
You drive through a curve at a speed higher than the posted speed. What will happen to your vehicle?
it needs more traction
Define banked curves
higher on outside than inside to keep you on the road
Large vehicles, such as trucks and busses.....
need more starting time and more stopping distance
Define reaction time.
the time after you see a hazard to actually do something you had 3/4 of a second
Define total stopping distance.
the distance yo car travels AFTER you apply the brake
How do you estimate your total stopping distance
perception time, reaction time, braking distance
Name the 3 factors that determine force of impact.
speed, mass, and distance
Define passive restraint.
air bag, you don't have to do anything for it to work.
Describe the proper way to adjust a safety belt
over collar bone, across chest, around low over hips
What are air bags designed to do? Are they used in conjunction with anything else?
designed to inflate to protect everyone, and used with seatbelt
Define airbag
passive restraint that inflates
Which energy absorbing device protects a driver in a font end collision?
steering wheel, bumper
Do all states require a child safety seat? Describe a properly installed one.
Yes all stated do.
