Loose federation of newly sovereign nations created after the collapse of the Soviet Union; it consisted of almost all the republics that previously had made up the USSR
Mikhail Gorbachev

Nomenklatura
Former Soviet Communist Party's system of controlling all important administrative appointments, thereby ensuring the support and loyalty of those who managed day to day affairs
Prerestroika
Given to Mikhail Gorbachev's attempts to restructure the Soviet economy while not completely sacrificing its socialist character
Glasnost
"Openness"; refers to Mikhail Gorbachev's curtailment of censorship and encouragement of political discussion and dissent within the former Soviet Union--most extensive relaxation of media censorship in Soviet history
Democratization
Gorbachev's policy of encouraging democratic reforms within the former Soviet including increased electoral competition w/in the Communist party
KGB
Soviet secret police. Along w/army headed by a group of 8 Communist Traditionalists staged a failed coup

President of Russian Republic-ill suited to run a country going through the transition from totalitarian tyranny to liberal democracy
Vladimir Putin
Yeltsin's successor. No-nonsense political boss--immensely popular because of this

Spawned from Mao's utopian obsession, designed to smash the party-state bureaucracy.

Mao's successor. Campaigned to abandon ideological dogma and adopt pragmatism
Politburo
Small clique that formed the supreme decision making body in the former Soviet. Members often belonged to Secretariat and were ministers of key governmental depts.
Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao
Successors of Deng. Continued his pragmatic political and economic policies
Maoism
Radical peasant-based brand of Communism that glorified revolution as a form of moral purification (official ideology of China)
De-collectivization
Type of re-privitization of farming. State made contracts w/indiv. households to purchase specified products; farmers could also sell produce in private markets
Sovereign Wealth Funds
State owned investment fund made up of financial assets like stocks, bonds, precious metals, and property--invest globally. China has invested huge sums in the USA via its sovereign wealth fund
Democracy Wall
Wall located in the heart of Beijing on which public criticism of the regime was permitted to be displayed in 1978
Tiananmen Square Massacre
1989-unarmed civilian workers and students marched in Tiananmen Square in Beijing to demand democratic freedom and govt reforms. Army troops responded w/force, killing 1,500 demonstrators and wounding another 10,000
Asian Flu
Used to describe the widespread financial turmoil in Asian stock markets, financial institutions, and economies in 1997
Kim Dae Jung
First opposition candidate ever elected in S. Korea. Won Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for valiant efforts to improve relations between the two Koreas
Roh Moo Hyun
Jung's successor. Won 2002 presidential election but immediately faced a recalcitrant legislature controlled by opposition parties
Lee teng-hui
1988, became first native Taiwanese leader to assume the office of the presidency and became first popularly elected president in Taiwanese history
