Valence Bond theory
- Tied to idea of bonding e- pairs b/w atoms and lone pairs of e- localized on a particular atom
- provide qualitative visual picture of molecular structure and bonding
- useful for molecules mad up of many atoms
Molecular orbital theory
- derive molecular orbitals that are spread out or deloclaized over the molecule
- more quantitative picture of bonding is needed
What is valence bond theory good for?
good for description of bonding for molecules in ground/lowest energy state
What is molecular orbital theory good for?
- essential to describe molecules in higher energy excited states
- explaining colors of compounds
- For a few molecules (NO, O2, MO) only theory that can describe accurately
Orbital overlap
- increases probability of finding the bonding e- in region of space b/w the 2 nuclei
- idea that bonds are formed by overlap of atomic orbtials in teh basis for valence bond theory
Sigma bond
- covalent bond that arisses from overlap of 2 orbitals
- bond where e- density is greatest along the axis of the bond
Main points of valence bond approach
- orbitals overlap to make bond
- 2 e- can be in overlapping orbitals (1 from each)
- B/c of orbital overlap, bonding e- have high prob of being found. Both e- are thus simultaneously attracted to both nuclei

Principles of orbital hybridization (ho=hybrid orbitals)
- # of ho=to # of atomic orbitals that are mixed to make ho set
- Hos built by combing s w/ as many p/d to have enough orbitals for base/lone pairs on central atom
- Hos directed toward terminal atoms, for better overlap/stronger bond b/w center/terminal atom
