Bandwidth
the speed at which a computer can transmit information along a network.
Bitmap
a type of image created using pixels.
Clip Art
a line drawing that is created as a vector graphic.
Compression
the process of reducing the size of an image in graphic files.
Copyright
the legal protection any artist has for the work he or she creates.
Drop Shadow
a graphic enhancement that places a shadow on the edge of an image or text.
Feathering
a graphic enhancement that blurs the edges of the image.
File Format
the type of program that created an image.
Float
a description of a figure that indicates it can be placed anywhere on a page.
Graphics
a broad term that describes anything on a page that is not text.
Inline
describes frames that are places within text and must stay with that text.
License
the permission granted to use a work of art without transferring the ownership.
Lossless
compression does not change any pixel data.
Lossy
compression reduces the size of an image file by removing information that is not essential.
Native
formats are those that can only be read by single programs.
Nondestructive Editing
makes changes to an image without actually affecting the original image.
Offset
is another term for standoff. (the space between an image and text.)
Pixel
data representation of a specific color at a specific location in a matrix or grid.
Rasterizing
converts a vector graphic to a bitmap.
Resolution
the number of pixels in an image.
Rotation
the movement of an image along a center axis.
Royalty Free
a term that describes a work of art that can be used without having to pay a fee or royalty each time you use it.
Scaled
enlarged or reduced.
Standoff
the space between the image and the text.
Stock Photos
professional photographs gathered into a library of images and marketed for use in documents or on the web.
Transparency
a graphic enhancement that lightens the image so that you can see the image or text behind it.
Vector
an image created by using a series of lines and curves rather than the pixels.
